This one-semester course is the integration and authentic application of basic biological, physical and technological principles. The criminal justice system has been greatly impacted by recent advancements in scientific methods and applications to prove the guilt or innocence of a suspect. Students will use inquiry, problem solving and critical thinking skills to gain greater understanding of the science behind analysis of various types of evidence. Topics of study will include DNA analysis, hair, fiber and glass analysis, fingerprinting, bloodstain patterns, ballistics, pathology and anthropology. Students should have a strong interest in laboratory work, particularly data collection and analysis. Students will also learn about career opportunities related to forensic science.
