New student mindset: "If I give real effort, use good strategies, and stick with it long enough, I will make progress...I can do hard things. I know this because I've done them in the past." (from Heroes Within, p. 84-85)
Students envisioning success before it occurs: "What would it look like for you to perform on that stage? What do you need to do to get there?"
The Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) student data tracker is an essential tool for art and music teachers (and students) to effectively monitor and support student growth in creativity, technical skills, and artistic expression. By regularly tracking student progress, participation, and mastery of key concepts, teachers can make informed decisions to differentiate instruction, address individual learning needs, and celebrate student achievements in meaningful ways.
This data-driven approach aligns with the Newark Public Schools’ Framework for Effective Teaching by supporting:
Planning and Preparation: Using student data to design lessons that engage diverse learners and align with curriculum goals.
Instruction: Adapting and scaffolding teaching methods based on student progress to enhance learning and artistic development.
Assessment: Providing timely, constructive feedback through formative and summative assessments to guide student improvement in identified areas of needed growth.
Professional Responsibilities: Reflecting on instructional practices and collaborating with colleagues to strengthen teaching and learning in the arts.
Daily Work
Class participation, practice, warm-ups, and assignments completed during class time. Reflects effort, preparation, and engagement.
Playing Tests / Skill Assessments
Formal assessments of technical skills, such as playing tests for music students or technique demonstrations for visual arts.
Performances / Presentations
Live or recorded performances, exhibitions, or presentations demonstrating mastery and artistic expression.
Portfolio Work
Collection of student work over time, including sketches, compositions, recordings, or projects that show growth and reflection.
Grading Guidelines:
Weekly Gradebook Updates:
Teachers will update the gradebook weekly to ensure grades accurately reflect students’ current standing. This allows timely feedback and opportunities for students to improve.
Assessment Criteria:
Projects and performances will be assessed using clear rubrics aligned with course objectives and NJ Visual and Performing Arts standards.
Late Work and Make-Up Policy:
Students are expected to submit work on time. Late submissions may be accepted with a penalty unless excused. Make-up opportunities for playing tests and performances will be provided when possible. Students who miss assignments and deadlines due to cutting will not be able to receive a passing grade for the assignment, although it is expected that the assignment is completed regardless.
Feedback:
Constructive feedback will be provided regularly to guide student growth and encourage self-reflection.
