Hello Bobcats! It's been awhile since the last update. Everyone at Norwayne is working hard to ensure students have successful state testing sessions. We are so proud of all the hard work everyone has put it to prepare the students for this important time of the year. With spring break approaching and the weather beginning to get a bit warmer, it's almost time to start thinking about summer activities. Our parent mentor, Heather Hutchison, has created a newsletter and a list of summer camp activities that she asked to be shared with everyone. Please see the links below to access these items. I hope everyone has a wonderful spring break and you all find some time to rest and relax before the big push to end of the school year. Our family survey will be sent out in the near future and I will also post it here on our website. Please be on the lookout for an email with the link and information to the survey. We appreciate you taking the time to complete this, as we gain valuable information from this survey to help us continue to improve our special education services.

Hello Bobcats! It is hard to believe we are already in the second nine weeks of school! I am so proud of all the students, staff, and families for the hard work that has been put in thus far. Our students are working hard in their classrooms and the school staff continues to provide amazing top notch instruction each and ever day. We are all thankful that the start to this school year was able to look a little more "normal" and it was great to see all the back to school excitement this year! I want to thank all of our families for the support and patience you provide as the district continues to navigate through the ever changing ups and downs associated with COVID. Together as a team our district, families, and community members will continue to rise to the challenge of providing the best we can for our students. Keep up the great work Bobcats!
Good Afternoon Bobcat Families! Can you believe we are down to 14 days left in the 2020-2021 school year. What a spectacular year it has been. I have witnessed the staff and students go above and beyond during these difficult times. Thank you so much for everything as always the Norwayne community continues to shine. I did want to pass along some information from SST9 in regards to Alternate Assessment and some family resources that ODE has put out. You can visit the links below for more information.
Good Afternoon Bobcat families! It has been a little while since the last update and I apologize for that. I wanted to make sure I shared with everyone the opportunities from Adaptive Sports Ohio. They have an office in Wooster and they offer year-round programs in Wayne County. Spring/Summer programs include wheelchair tennis, track and field, and wheelchair lacrosse. They are open to individuals of all ages with a primary physical disability. They will also be hosting an adaptive sports camp for youth ages 7-18 with a physical disability. Good Morning Bobcats! We continue to move forward within the pandemic. During this time Ohioans and others have been asked to follow safety requirements that resulted in significant adjustments for children and families. Adults and children faced notable challenges and barriers. Flexibility has been paramount to success and although we are not in the clear just yet, we are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. ODE has developed many resources for families to access who are experiencing a number of different challenges. The Student and Staff Well-Being Toolkit is an area to find the different resources to help everyone during this time. We hope that everyone continues to stay healthy, positive, and flexible as we approach the end of the pandemic. The special education department would like to thank the families for their willingness to meet virtually and work with us in regards to paperwork and other barriers that are not the norm usually. Most importantly thank you to the students for being rock stars and showing up each and every day with a smile on their face ready to learn and get better. If you have any questions please reach out to the special services department via phone or email. We look forward to working with everyone well beyond the pandemic and into the future.

Good Afternoon Bobcats! I wanted to share a video from ODE that helps discuss the Autism and Jon Peterson Scholarship program in further detail. This is something we discuss at every IEP meeting for students. Hopefully this will provide clarification for those families searching for further information in regards to both programs. Have a great day.

Good Afternoon Bobcat Community! As we approach the end of the first 9 weeks I wanted to reflect on all the hard work from everyone to start the 2020-2021 school year. The teachers and students are putting forth amazing efforts on a daily basis in the wake of the COVID restrictions taking place. Now more than ever is the time to work together and think outside of the box as we continue to provide the best services possible for each student. Intervention times are essential to ensure the students are able to work on the necessary skills to see growth. As we continue into the 2nd 9 weeks we are still holding our IEP and ETR meetings virtually at this time. If we do have a face to face meeting we are honoring those requests but limiting the meeting to only the parents, student, and case manager. All other members are zooming or google meeting in virtually. I cannot thank everyone enough for their efforts thus far. I look forward to our continued success going forward.

Good afternoon Bobcat Community members! We are just about a month into the 2020-2021 school year and I must say the adjustments made the families, students, and staff have been nothing short of amazing. The work and collaboration I am seeing on a daily basis is truly inspiring. I encourage families to reach out to their teachers with any questions or concerns thus far. For online learners please keep in touch and keep showing up to our specific intervention times so that we may assist you with your education. We continue to hold video and phone conference meetings which have been well attended and allowed for great flexibility in schedules. Please keep in mind the ever changing landscape we find ourselves in for any changes that could take place going forward. Thank you for a great start to another great year!

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students of the Norwayne Community,
I hope you all had a great Summer break with friends and family. With the pandemic still impacting the world we live in, I wanted to reach out to everyone with some basic guidelines for special education for the 2020-2021 school year. These items can be found below this paragraph for your reference as well as within the district and building restart/reopen handbooks. Things may look a little different this year and we will have more health/safety protocols in place but one thing that will not change is our commitment to delivering the best educational and related services possible to our students. I cannot thank the families of the community enough for the past 6 years. The relationships we have built will help direct us through the turmoil we are facing currently. Communication, collaboration, and flexibility will be at the forefront of success this year going forward. Please contact myself, an intervention specialist, or other staff member with any questions or concerns that may pop up in regards to special education this year. We are all in this together, and I know we will come out stronger, smarter, and wiser than ever.
Vince Sette
Special Services Director - Norwayne Local Schools
The Special Education Department at Norwayne Local Schools is committed to providing a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to our students with disabilities, to the greatest extent possible in alignment with public health guidelines. Collaboration with families has always been an integral part of the special education process and continues to be essential during this time. To address the unique needs of students with disabilities, special education providers will continue to work collaboratively with families to identify the most essential services for each student that may be provided in the learning environment chosen by you as the parent/guardian (i.e., remotely/online or in-person). This may require reconvening of IEP teams to formalize services and/or support. (Note: This information also applies to those students who are eligible under Section 504 and have Section 504 Plans.)
Transitioning Students Back to the School Buildings –
We recognize many of our students with disabilities struggle with change/transitions. We also recognize they thrive on routine, which was significantly altered for all students during the spring of 2020. As a result, the district will work with families to provide resources for their students to ease the transition back to the school building (e.g., social stories, virtual tours when possible, previewing schedules, etc.).
Child Find and Evaluations –
Norwayne Local Schools will continue to identify, locate and evaluate students suspected of having a disability and needing special education and related services. At the same time, Norwayne Local Schools will be mindful that students have been displaced from their typical learning environment when initiating the referral process. Some evaluation procedures can be completed in remote learning situations; whereas, some evaluation procedures require in-person contact with students or observations of students in school settings. Norwayne Local Schools will conduct evaluations remotely and in-person while adhering to the health guidelines for the safety of students and staff.
Evaluation Team Report (ETR), Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team Meetings –
When possible, ETR and IEP meetings will be held virtually to include all required team members (i.e., parent/guardian, intervention specialist, general education teacher and district representative).
If a face to face meeting is to be conducted we will follow guidelines to practice social distancing as much as possible.
Delivery of Special Education, Related Services, Accommodations & Modifications
Most likely, for students who will be educated in the traditional model, IEPs may not need to be amended. For those students who will be educated online, IEP teams may need to reconvene to address specific areas of the IEP as related to the identified learning environment. Accommodations and modifications can be provided regardless of the educational setting. The IEP team will continue to work collaboratively and make any necessary IEP amendments in this area that may arise due to the educational setting. As always, IEP teams may reconvene at any time to discuss student needs and programming.
Progress Monitoring and Reporting –
Special education teams will have in place data collection and reporting methods (and service logs for those participating in remote learning) as indicated on IEPs. Collecting data and tracking the provision of services will assist educators and families in determining the effectiveness of instruction provided, student performance on IEP goals/objectives, and assist IEP teams in making any necessary adjustments to instruction. Progress reports will continue to be provided as indicated on the IEP.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to take this time to say thank you. Thank you for your flexibility during the last several weeks, thank you for patience, thank you for your collaboration, thank you for your trust, and thank you for being such an integral part of your child's education. We could not have accomplished the things we did over the COVID-19 facility shutdown with your help. We truly have a great partnership with the families and I could not be more proud to work with families from the Norwayne Community.
The school year officially ended last week and as we move into Summer months I wanted to keep everyone up to date on items. We will continue to update this website and push out resources as we receive them. We will continue to answer your emails and calls whenever they may arise. We will continue to do everything we can to help answer any questions you may have as we continue to progress forward through these unknown waters.
You should be receiving your child's progress reports via email we have on file and if you would like a hard copy please give the office a call or send me an email and we can mail the most recent reports your way. My hope for you and the children is to find some calm during these Summer months coming up. I hope the weather is amazing and you are able to have a great Summer. We will continue to do our best planning for the 2020-2021 school year with the understanding that things can change in a matter of seconds. I am confident that we will get through this time and come out the other side even stronger. Thank you for everything once again and have a great day!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this update finds you with continued health and finding the positives during this time. We are approaching the end of the school year and I would like to continue the students to keep up the great work that I have seen throughout the remote learning period. I am blown away by the resilency of the students and staff to remain flexible and adapt to the ever changing landscape. We will continue to provide services throughout the end of the school year virtually as we have been.
I would like to share a new resource from Tri-County ESC parent advocate Mrs. Addy Fletcher. Please find the flyer below for specific details in regards to participate in a Triple P parenting class, virtually.
As always please reach out with any questions or concerns. Have a great week Bobcats!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this update finds you and your family in good health and finding the positives during these trying times. As we continue to work together to provide the best possible education and services during the pandemic it is our goal to keep you up to date as much as possible as things continue to change.
I wanted to provide the families resources to help at home as well as remind you of tri-county esc parent mentor, Mrs. Addy Fletcher. She is a great resource to help answer any questions you may have. She has provided me a link below to a webinar for parents who may be struggling to assist their children who have difficulty with executive functioning skills. The webinar will be held on April 30, 2020 @ 7:00 pm via zoom. You can register by clicking the link below.

Students will be receiving progress reports for the 4th 9 weeks which will be sent out electronically. It is essential that we have your most up to date email to ensure you will be receiving the progress reports at the end of the quarter. Although the content may look different as we continue working remotely please be assured we are collecting data to report on IEP goals. In the rare instances where we need face to face interaction to collect data on goals we will address these via a statement due to the COVID-19 stay at home order.
For our high school seniors with graduation the HS intervention specialist will be in touch to conduct Summary of Performance reviews. These reviews will continue to be held via video/phone conference as we have for the previous weeks.
As always please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I thank you for your continued collaboration during these times. I am reminded daily of why Norwayne is such a great place and it is because of our work together to help provide the best possible education to the students of Norwayne. Have a great day!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Governor DeWine has just clarified that schools will not be returning to session for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The special services department and staff will continue to work with you and the students to deliver e-learning opportunities with special education services going forward. We ask that you continue your collaboration with us so together we can remain flexible during the COVID-19 closure. Please email myself, your teachers, your building administrators with any questions or concerns related to your child's education. We will continue to communicate updates through the school website, videos from administrators, and the special services website going forward. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the team as we strive to make the most out of the current situation for your child, your family, and the community. Have a great day!

Special Services Director - Norwayne Local Schools
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to touch base with you as it has been several weeks since the last update. With all the different changes that have taken place thus far with COVID-19 things have changed for e-learning opportunities. Norwayne has moved into the e-learning for all students where new material will be taught along with review of previously learned concepts as well. Intervention specialist should be reaching out to students to offer times to meet through teleconference or phone to help with IEP goals or other academic concerns. We are all aware of the struggle of online learning and we are doing our best to support each student and their unique individual needs. Please know if you have any questions you can call or email Mr. Sette at any time. I would encourage students and parents to reach out to their intervention specialist, general education teachers, or building principals with any questions or concerns. Related service providers are continuing their services through teleconferencing or work packets depending on the families preference. Our IEP and ETR meetings will continue to take place through Google Meet or Zoom teleconferencing during the duration of the extended break. We will be sending invites through email with the link to the meetings so it is imperative that we have your working email to communicate these items. We appreciate your continued support throughout these very difficult times. I am so thankful for the staff and families of Norwayne as we are all in this together. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! We hope to see you very soon and please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to share with you a resource from State Support Team 9 which Norwayne is a part of their region. You can click here for the SST9 COVID-19 website where they have compiled information from ODE, the governor, and the US Department of Education.
ODE continues to update everyone on their website which you can find here. Please check this regularly for any changes as they are doing a great job of getting information out to everyone as fast as possible.
Tri-County ESC has created a resource page as well. Their page can be found by clicking here.
I also wanted to create a video showing how we are accessing our video conferencing for IEP and ETR meetings during the COVID-19 extended break. Along with this video I show where to find resources for special education and how we will continue to provide services for the students. Thank you for your time and please feel free to email with any questions.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Norwayne Local Schools and the Special Services Department want to reassure our families we are here to support your child during this unknown time. With the closure to all schools by Governor DeWine for the next 3 weeks we will be making every effort to continue services as best we can. I realize this brings so many questions and concerns for students and families. As much as I want to have answers for your this is an unprecedented time and we will do our best to keep you informed of everything. What I can guarantee you is that the special services department will do everything in our power both during this extended break and when we return to support your child. Things are subject to change as we continue to make our way through the unknown. Below you can find Norwayne's current plan going forward.
Intervention Specialist will be reaching out to their families with vital information in regards to the online learning, office hours, ways to contact staff, and reassuring students we are still here for them.
Related services will continue to the best of our ability. Our occupational and physical therapist from EJ Therapy will be contacting families to set up times that they will be offering services from their facilities.
Speech services will be conducted through our speech language pathologist, Mrs. Stutzman online and via video when possible.
We will be holding meetings (IEP and ETR) via phone and video conferencing during our time off. We will also offer face to face meetings once we return to school to review and answer any questions families may have.
I want to personally thank you for entrusting us on a daily basis to be there for your student. I want to make sure that each and every parent knows they can contact me via email at anytime. As things change and time goes on, please make sure to view the district website, special services website, your teachers, or Mr. Sette with any questions. We are in this together and although right now things appear dim, we will grow and become stronger together.

As January quickly comes to an end I wanted to make sure everyone knows if there are any questions or concerns the Special Services Office is always open and willing to listen. As parents may have noticed the progress reports coming home with children look significantly different this year than in years past. We are now requiring teachers to be more detailed in these reports about where and when the data came from that comprises the actual percentage. If you questions with the new progress reports please reach out to your intervention specialist or Mr. Sette directly. Stay warm and as always thanks for your continued support.

We are in full swing and approaching the winter break. IEPs and ETRs continue to be updated while students are hard at work in their respective classes striving to learn as much as possible. Please check out our new transition planning page which is located under the programs and services tab. It is a general overview of different activities that we offer for the students starting in kindergarten. We are always looking to update and offer the best opportunities for our students when they are transitioning. Our goal is for every student to be able to answer the "What is Next?" question after they graduate from Norwayne. Thank you for your continued support and have a great holiday with your family.

District report cards were released this past week. To view Norwayne's district report card please click the 2018 Report Card Link to be redirected. We are extremely pleased with the results, but not satisfied as we continue to work to provide the students of Norwayne the best possible educational experience. If you have any questions please contact your building administrator for clarification on the different grades.

We are off to a great start of the 2018-2019 school year. We have officially begun to use the new ETR and IEP forms so if things look a bit off please do not hesitate to call or ask anyone in the Special Services Department. The special education students at Norwayne Local Schools have once again excelled on their end of the year state assessments (2017-2018). We had every one of our students participate in the state assessments last year. The performance index in English Language Arts was 74.8 with the goal listed as 57.3 for the district. The performance index in Math was 71.0 with the goal listed at 58.2. The students continue to work hard and the staff continue to push the students to reach their very best educationally. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.
Vince Sette
ETR and IEP forms are getting a makeover for the upcoming school year (2018-2019). Starting after July 1, 2018 it will be required by law for schools and agencies to utilize the new forms. We realize this may be a time where you as parents have many questions about how this impacts your child's services moving forward. Please be assured that we are here to answer those questions as well as continue to provide student's individualized services throughout their time with us. The forms (IEP and ETR) themselves have gone through a slight physical change, however the reasoning behind these forms has not. These documents are put into place to ensure that the services for your child to make progress and excel in their education are carried forward. There are a number of different resources for parents and educators to utilize which will be provided below by clicking on the hyperlinks. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know. We look forward to providing the students of Norwayne with the best services moving forward.
