2. Piggy and Gerald Line Tracing

Using small writing utensils (broken crayons, golf sized pencils) trace along the paths. You can try starting and Piggy and going up to Gerald, and then switch and start with Gerald and draw down to Piggy. Take your time and do your best to stay on the lines!

3. Piggy and Gerald Play-doh Mat

Roll small balls of play-doh to cover each of the circles on the picture. You can also use tweezers or tongs to pick up small items like Cherrios, pebbles, small pieces or rolled up paper, etc. and cover the holes instead.

4. Letter and Shape Formation

Letter, number, and shape formation can be practiced on a vertical surface (on a window or easel) or on a flat surface (dry erase board or table top). I have placed "lines" with painters tape on the window and on a dry erase board about an 1" to 1 1/2" apart, although it can be wider apart for younger students. This activity is working on hand strengthening through manipulating putty or playdough along with ripping or cutting the putty/playdough with scissors to achieve the appropriate size for the letters and shapes. This also works on visual planning (size and alignment), letter recognition and formation, along with trunk and arm strength and stability if working on a vertical surface.

5. Modeling Pre-writing Strokes

This activity can be completed using paper and pencil/crayon, white board and marker, or sidewalk and chalk- be creative! To begin, model for your child a row of straight vertical lines and have him/her copy these below your row. Repeat this step with vertical lines, diagonal lines and circles. Make sure to verbally "label" your lines while drawing to increase your child's writing vocabulary with terms such as, "line down", and "line across". Don't forget to have fun!
