PRINCIPAL NEWS & NOTES

MES Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Band @ The Woodlands

For the first time in MES history, our chamber orchestra and jazz band have been invited to perform and collaborate with our neighbors, The Woodlands! This was a very exciting opportunity for all parties involved. After our students performed holiday songs for members of their BLOOM program students had the opportunity to decorate holiday cookies with the Woodlands members.

BLOOM (Building Lifestyles for Ongoing Opportunities & Movement ) is a day program that can also transition into a weeklong, overnight summer camp. Campers are Ages 13-21 and they meet two Saturdays a month 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. BLOOM is a reverse inclusion program for adolescents with and without disabilities, focusing on transition skills, social skills, communication skills and peer interaction through sports, recreation, nutrition and leadership activities. The program focuses on the development of transition skills and healthy lifestyles designed to develop the self-determination, empowerment, overall health and leadership for adolescents in transition.

Adolescents with disabilities are each paired with a peer without a disability and together they cultivate friendships, work on social skills, foster positive attitudes, develop life-long skills and enhance their understanding and acceptance of individuals with varying backgrounds and abilities.

School Closings and Delays

Just as a reminder, in the event of a two hour delay, morning activities at MES are cancelled. This includes ensembles that typically meet at 8:00AM.

Also, kindergarten parents - please be mindful of the modified schedule for kindergarten when there is a school day:

AM Kindergarten: 11:00AM - 12:45PM

PM Kindergarten: 1:45PM - 3:30PM

In the event that North Allegheny Schools are closed because of snow or other emergency conditions, the official announcement is provided on the NA website and is also placed on NATV Cable and communicated to local television stations.

Families should also receive notification through the District's School Messenger system. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date.

Outdoor Recess

As the temperatures fluctuate and become colder, it is important that students come to school prepared for outside recess. Students will go outside as many days as possible unless it is raining or when the temperature/wind chill is below approximately 20 degrees.
