Scanlan Center For School Mental Health Website
The mission of the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health Clinic is to increase access to mental health care for K-12 students, educators, and school staff. We work with Iowa K-12 school districts, Area Education Agencies (AEAs), and Iowa mental health systems to provide post-crisis services and mental health support.
The SCSMH Clinic strives to serve clients who face barriers to accessing mental health resources. Our services are ideal for clients who live in rural Iowa and may not have access to local providers or experience other barriers to accessing care (e.g., financial, transportation).
We offer virtual and in-person individual counseling services to K-12 students and school staff. We work with clients to identify and address specific goals based on their unique needs. The frequency and duration of services depend on the client’s individual needs and the clinician’s availability. In most cases, it is recommended that clients participate in weekly or biweekly sessions, at least initially. As treatment progresses, the frequency of appointments may be revisited based on treatment needs in collaboration with your clinician.

What are Inpatient Services?: Inpatient treatment is when an individual receives care at a general or specialty hospital with 24-hour care from mental health professionals.
If you can't trust yourself to stay safe and need to be monitored
If you are having a mental health crisis and need emergency services
If you are actively suicidal or homicidal
If your mental illness symptoms become too overwhelming and outpatient services are not enough
If you are actively hallucinating or you are unable to get your mood swings under control in an outpatient setting
If you are unable to break the cycle of addiction in an outpatient setting
If you need to escape for a few days; a short hospital stay where your basic needs are taken care of can provide you the break you need for your mental health.
If you need to get quick, comprehensive medical care; hospitals will have all the specialists you need for treating mental health. They will also be able to set up aftercare for you to prepare you for when you leave
If you are not sure if you meet the criteria for inpatient hospitalization, contact your local mental hospital and they will assess your current needs and make the appropriate recommendations.
If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis, you might consider voluntarily checking yourself into a mental health hospital. The goals of a hospital stay are to help you feel better and set up a plan for ongoing care. Most hospitals offer treatment options like medication management and individual, group, and family therapy.
Iowa frequently has a shortage of available inpatient beds. This makes it difficult to get admitted for inpatient services, especially if voluntarily. Inpatient facilities often have to limit care to the people with the most severe symptoms. Those admitted voluntarily may often meet the standard to be committed involuntarily.
For information on Involuntary Commitment, click here.

The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is designed to provide prompt and effective treatment if you are experiencing a mental health emergency, such as an emotional crisis or a psychiatric issue needing medical care right away. At University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics you will be treated by staff who care and understand complex mental health crises.
Patients and staff share a calm and open area with comfortable reclining chairs. You are first seen by a nurse, and then you will participate in a psychiatric evaluation with your care team to see how you are doing. You may be offered medicines or therapy to ease your symptoms.
Our care team will then make a stabilization plan with you to help you feel better. We may talk with your friends or family members to learn more about your needs. After we’ve had some time to see how you are doing, you may be given choices for more care. Those choices might be a hospital stay, more medicines, going to therapy, getting connected to community resources, or other care options.
