This picture highlights strategies for reading accuracy. Children use these strategies to decode unfamiliar words.
Comprehension strategies include making connections, asking questions and visualizing(making pictures in our minds) as we read. When we read, we use all kinds of ways to help us understand. We have lots of thoughts-about things the story reminds us of, or questions we are wondering about, or images we form in our heads. Reading is thinking and making meaning. The best way to tell if your child understands what they have read is by talking with them. Talk naturally about the book. Try starting a conversation with something general like "So what did you think of that book?" or "What was your favorite part?" or "Did it remind you of anything?" Provide opportunities for your child to share about the books they are reading.
Fluent Readers:
*Read naturally, as if they are speaking.
*Read the words correctly.
*Take brief pauses at punctuation marks like commas and periods.
*Change their voices at a question mark or to show strong feelings at an exclamation mark.
*Read words in small phrases rather than one by one.
