We want children to enjoy reading, so we make sure that they take ownership in choosing engaging and appropriate books to read. We spend a lot of time talking with our students about using the "I PICK" and "The Rule of 5" strategies to select a variety of texts for independent reading.

Grab a book and hold up your hand
Put down a finger for every hard word you find.
0-1 fingers down- This book is too easy for you!
2-3 fingers down- This book is just right for you!
4-5 fingers down- This book is too hard for you!
