When students are first learning to read, they can:
Read the pictures (look at and talk about the pictures)
2. Read the words, or
3. Retell the story (in their own words).
Beginning readers learn to hear sounds in words, distinguish letters, and learn words. Listening to and interacting with rhymes, songs and poems, such as Nursery Rhymes, is a wonderful lead into reading and supports early literacy development. They teach children rhyming, repetition, and rhythm. These are all important pre-reading skills!
We teach children to listen for the sounds in words. Saying a word aloud and stretching out each sound allows children to listen for the sounds and helps to transfer this skill to their reading and writing.
