Tutorial videos are a popular format for sharing information on new products. They are also an effective promotional tool. Researching, recording, and editing such films is a time-consuming and costly process, however. Narrated screen captures could prove an inexpensive alternative. Most resource developers already feature tutorial videos on their websites, limiting the usefulness of this design solution.

Advantages

Videos are popular and accessible
Attractive to new users who are unfamiliar with an existing tool or resource
Users may skip to only the parts that are pertinent to them
Videos are easily shared
Video demonstrations are often more effective than written, static documents
May be more popular with younger teachers

Disadvantages

Many sites and tools already have a library of “How to…” and “Intro to…” videos for their products
Good quality videos are costly and time-consuming to produce
Videos quickly use up expensive storage space.
The comments sections of videos are often ignored or trolled
Format doesn’t really encourage/allow collaboration and resource sharing between teachers
Keeping up with new product launches would require some kind of vetting process to focus only on resources most likely to be of interest to educators
