2019

Transition: the journey from paediatric to adult services.

In 2019, a group of YPAGne members spent a summer in the paediatric outpatient department at the Great North Children's Hospital gathering patients and families experiences of transition discussions. They did a spectacular job and gathered over 1000 responses! The data is being analysed to help the Trust improve transition for all young patients.

Pill Swallowing: peer reviewing an online toolkit

During lockdown, group members helped to develop an online toolkit to help children and young people to swallow pill medication. Reviewing the information then teaching their friends and peers, the group helped refine the module and learned new skills such as analysing data along the way! The toolkit has been a huge success and has been rolled out by the RCPCH across the country.

2021

Young people, bio banks & consent.

This project was co-produced with 6 group members & Dr Emma Lim for the DIAMONDS 2020 research project. Engaging with health professionals involved with research and bio bank samples, the group learned about bio banks, the types of samples collected, different types of consent, data collection, data analysis and presenting findings. The data was presented at the ESPID Paediatric Infectious Diseases Conference 2022.

2022 The Hidden cost of paediatric admissions

This project has two aims.

1: To quantify the burden of indirect costs to children and families of an admission for fever in a high-risk immunocompromised patient

2: To offer young people applying to medical school and from non-medical/traditional backgrounds the opportunity to gain work experience and mentoring.
