Supporting Social Care Research
In January 2018, the criteria for the inclusion of a study on the CRN portfolio of studies were revised so as to include studies supported by the NIHR School for Social Care Research (NIHR SSRC). This expansion has seen a small number of studies ‘badged’ as social care included in the portfolio, primarily involving the care of older adults.

NIHR ENRICH
NIHR Enabling Research in Care Homes (NIHR ENRICH) is a collaboration between the NIHR School for Social Care Research (SSCR), who manage the NIHR ENRICH toolkit/website, and the CRN who manage the ENRICH Care Home Network.

Recently published BASW and NIHR report highlights challenges and opportunities for evidence use in social work policy and practice. The report highlights barriers ‘from structural issues of ministerial and functional responsibility to data sharing and possible cultural resistance to research by practitioners’, while also sharing more ‘positive signs of flourishing interest in evidence, paired with networks and activities for teaching and reflective practice’.

In 2019 DHSC confirmed a small amount, one off, non-recurrent investment to be used to support the expansion of the CRN portfolio for social care research (ongoing, planned, and anticipated research). The Pump Priming Social Care Research Initiative Scheme was led by Professor Geraldine Macdonald (NSL for Social Care) and overseen by Specialty Cluster C at King's College London.

Social Care Group Contact List
We are pleased to share a new learning resource that has been designed to support colleagues in their understanding of the different areas of research. Through the use of interactive flashcards, learners will be able to compare and contrast the differences and similarities in clinical health research, social care research and public health research. You can access the learning on NIHR Learn.
This resource is ideal for inductions/new starters, those who are interested in becoming research active or those who would like to improve on their existing knowledge etc. The resource has been designed to provide a basic level of understanding. It won’t meet all learning needs, it’s an initial resource that will hopefully trigger some useful conversations and help to identify more specific learning needs in this area in the future.
The interactive visualisation on this page was developed in partnership between Skills for Care and Health Education England. The visualisation shows the latest information from the Adult Social Care Workforce Data Set (ASC-WDS) split into integrated Care System (ICS) areas. The information should be of use to local planners across the health and social care systems.
