Location/Supervisors:

Summary of Project/OOPE:

I am entering the second year as a fellow within the ‘Northern Leadership & Management Fellowship’, based at the Northern Deanery Headquarters in Newburn. This programme exists to facilitate practical leadership and management development and equip trainees to excel in future consultant department/organisation-level managerial roles and beyond.

My first year offered an unrivalled insight into how a large organisation such as HEENE is led, insights into trust-level management across the region and practical managerial and business experience (e.g. procurement, governance, project management, management accounting, human resource management, marketing and more).

As I progress into a second year, I have taken up the role of business manager for the fellowship, responsible for programme development, promotion and support of four additional fellows new to the role in 2020 (3 of whom happen to also be T&O trainees!).

My main project for the fellowship surrounds driving the development of region-wide Leadership & Management opportunities for trainees (including postgraduate educational opportunities, qualifications and the Northern L&M Fellowship). However, this fellowship is characterised by exposure to a breadth of opportunities, and I have also been involved in projects concerning trainee engagement, online educational technologies, podcasting, digital health and even work with an animation studio to name a few!

Specific Aims:

1) Improve the provision of Leadership & Management development opportunities for trainees in our region

2) Gain early exposure to specific managerial skills relevant to future practice as a consultant T&O surgeon (e.g. people management, business case presentation, meeting management, governance, finance/budget management etc)

3) Complete MBA
