What is a psychiatric service dog?
Luna has 150 hours of specialized training to respond to people who are in crisis, are stressed, and receives commands to “give hugs” “give kisses” “stay with humans who are emotional”. She has been working as a psychiatric service dog now for many years.
What makes Luna different from a “companion dog” and the other dogs that work at Nido?
The other dogs help kids feel better by being a cute and well behaved dog. They can fetch, or be held, but they do not respond to specific commands to help others feel better. Luna has specific “anxiety response” training to receive commands that she then will follow in order to support a human with their emotions.
