Hello! My name is Luna and I am a psychiatric service dog. My owner is Ian Lally, who works as a high school counselor. I am 5 years old and have been working at Nido for 3 years as a service dog in the high school. This means I am highly trained to help humans in emotional distress. I have commands that I listen to, and if you use these commands, I will listen to you better.
I have been click trained, meaning if you snap your fingers while giving me a command, I will listen more quickly. Also, if you use low tones with your voice, this means that you are serious and want me to behave quickly. If you use high tones with me, I know that you are happy with the behavior I am doing in that moment. I am motivated by pets and snuggles, so if I do a command, give me lots of high toned praise.
Commands that I know:
Luna Come - I will come to you
Luna Down - Sometimes I get very excited and my start to stand like a human. If you don't want me to do this, say "Luna down" and "Luna sit" and I will stop.
Luna Continue - If you want me to continue to do a behavior, make the "OK" sign with your fingers and I know that you want me to continue the desired behavior.
Luna Place - I will go to "my place" and lay down. This means I am not needed and I can just relax. If you point to a chair, or the carpet, or a space on the floor next to you, I will just chill and likely fall asleep. It really helps if you SNAP your fingers while giving this command, and then pat my place with your hand so I know exactly where I should be.
Luna Give Hugs - If you point at a person, snap your fingers and say "Luna give hugs" I will go to that person and lean into them. I will also expect to be pet. I am responding to emotional distress, so if you give this command I will listen to the person's heartbeat, smell their sweat, and most importantly look at their body language to help calm the human. If you use the handle on my harness to gently pull my towards the person, I will know better who to help, especially if there are more than one human interacting with me
Luna Stay - If you point to "my place", snap your fingers and say "Luna place, Luna stay" I know that I should stay where you put me.
Luna Protect the Office - If you need to leave me alone, tell me in a lower tone to "protect the office" or "protect" whatever space you need to leave me. I will be more calm and know to "protect" that space and not leave, and wait for you to come back and get me.
Luna be Polite - I really like to sniff and lick (give kisses) but I know that some humans don't like dogs and may be afraid. If I am doing a behavior that is not appropriate, or makes the human feel uncomfortable, if you snap your fingers and say "Luna be polite" then I will stop that behavior and look for another command.
Luna Sit - I will sit and expect to be pet
Luna Besos (or Luna kisses) - I love to lick, and I know that it makes most humans happy. But I also know that some humans only want a few licks. If you give me the command to give kisses, I will continue the behavior, until you say "Luna no thank you" and put two fingers to your lips, like you are telling a human to be quiet. I know that this means "stop licking" and look for another command.
Luna Paw - if you tell me to sit, and then say "Luna paw" I will put my paw up to shake.
If you combine these commands together, it gives me a better sense of what you want me to do. I want to be a very good service dog, so using these commands together help me know what I am supposed to do. If you say "Luna come" "Luna give hugs" "Luna stay" and then use the "OK" sign with your hands, this will mean I should give the human you are pointing to a hug and then stay with that human until you tell me "Luna good girl! Good girl giving hugs! Ok luna back to your place. Luna sit, Luna stay. Luna Place. Good girl". Or if I start to give kisses or hugs and the human is feeling scared, or doesn't like it, say "Luna be polite" "Luna sit" - if the human no longer wants to interact with me say "Luna good girl. Luna Place. Luna Stay. Good girl." Don't forget to snap your fingers and use lower tones for the command, and higher tones after I start the desired behavior.
