The 5 SEL Skills
In New Haven Public Schools, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in college, career, and life. We recognize that our students’ personal development must be nurtured concurrently with their academic development, with a high level of focus in the areas of multi-tiered support (MTSS), research-based instructional practices, and supportive SEL spaces.
The promotion of student self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making skills is paramount to improving student attitudes and beliefs about self, others, and school. We are committed to supporting student growth and development using the Whole Child Framework and the Connecticut State Department of Education’s Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Habits.
Along with the State of Connecticut, we align our SEL work with the CASEL Framework.
NHPS Vision
Our vision is to be a premier urban school district that ensures access to equitable opportunities and successful outcomes for all students as they prepare for college, career, and life.
NHPS Mission
To provide all students in New Haven Public Schools with personalized, authentic, and engaging learning experiences through creativity, exploration, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and high-quality instruction. To foster a culture of continuous improvement through collaborative partnerships with staff, families, and the New Haven community. To support students’ growth and development by utilizing the Whole Child Framework.
What We Do
Building SEL Skills in NHPS
In New Haven Public Schools, through Social Emotional Learning (SEL) training and a multi-tiered system of support, customized for each school’s and each student’s needs, we build capacity in educators to develop student social-emotional behavioral skills, through culture and climate, explicit instruction, and academic integration.
We develop students’ social-emotional skills in order to increase student engagement in academic learning, reduce dysregulated behaviors that prevent students from experiencing success, and improve academic outcomes, in order to prepare all students for college and career.
