Explicit Instruction of SEL takes place in weekly or daily SEL blocks within our schools. The SEL block in a school may be called CREW, Wellness Wednesday, Advisory, or have another name meaningful to your school. During SEL blocks, students are given opportunities to learn about and practice social emotional learning (SEL) skills. These skills can be: communication, goal-setting, relationship-building, self-reflection, growth mindset, conflict resolution, mindfulness, or any number of other SEL topics. At K-8 schools, we are building SEL instruction blocks into the weekly schedule in order to teach explicit social emotional skills through the program Second Step and other SEL lessons. At 9-12 schools, we are building SEL instruction block into the weekly or monthly schedule, often referred to as Advisory, in order to teach explicit social emotional skills through the program School Connect and other SEL lessons.
