Our district-wide 3-Pronged Approach to SEL includes embedding social emotional learning (SEL) into every aspect of a school, including culture and climate, explicit instruction, and academic integration.
Culture and Climate: Through our whole-school SEL mottoes, such as CREW (Collaboration, Empathy, Resilience, Work), STAR (Safety, Teamwork, Achievement, Respect), and CRAIG (Compassion, Respect, Action, Integrity, Greatness), we keep our core values living and breathing in every aspect of the school day.
Explicit Instruction: At K-8 schools, we are building SEL instruction blocks into the weekly schedule in order to teach explicit social emotional skills through the program Second Step and other SEL lessons. At 9-12 schools, we are building SEL instruction block into the weekly or monthly schedule, often referred to as Advisory, in order to teach explicit social emotional skills through the program School Connect and other SEL lessons.
Academic Integration: Within our classes throughout the day, we seek to bring the language of SEL into our discussions about the tools students use to succeed, such as, self-awareness, strengths, social awareness, diverse, healthy, and supportive. Further, we provide students with strategies, such as mood meters to check in on how we are feeling, graphic organizers to process through new information, and get-to-know-you and collaborative opportunities to enhance social awareness.
