Dear parents and caregivers,
We thank you for sharing your children with us. In New Haven Public Schools we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in college, career, and life. We want to nurture our students’ personal development along with their academic development.
What is Social and Emotional Learning?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children, adolescents, and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make personal decisions (CASEL).
SEL is a multi-tiered system of support, which means teachers will help meet the needs of all students, so that they may develop these skills, no matter their current level of mastery.
SEL promotes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These skills are paramount to improving student attitudes and beliefs about self, others, and school. These topics are integrated into academic teaching, embedded in the culture and climate of the building, and are explicitly taught to students.
Definition of SEL (CASEL) -
We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.
The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has adopted the 5 nationally-recognized SEL skills provided by the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
