WEEK OF 04/02/2023:

Working together as a community

By Ren Leija

Hi everyone!

Thank you to Ernesto Nieto and Gloria De Leon, the founders of the National Hispanic Institute, for attending this week’s training to inspire our Great Debaters and learn more about the assets they bring to NHI, and their community.

We also want to extend a special thank you to the parent/guardian(s) who were able to attend Sunday’s meeting and learn more about what NHI and what the Great Debate is all about — and of course, see our Great Debaters in action, stepping up on stage to advocate for changes in their schools. We are so incredibly proud of all of our students at the NHIatAustin Alliance.

Read more about it below! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to nhiaustin@nhimail.com

See everyone next week!

Weekly Wonderings

This week, we had the founders of the National Hispanic Institute, Ernesto Nieto and Gloria De Leon, came to talk to us about the history behind the organization and Great Debate, to inspire the Great Debaters to lean into their creativity and imagination.

Afterward, the Great Debaters separated themselves into groups from the same school where they came up with solutions to things they would do differently in their schools to make them better. They even presented on the stage in the theater, to everyone (including parents/guardians)!

We are so proud of everyone!

Fundamental of the Week

NHI has 25 core fundamentals that are core to our success. These fundamentals define how we relate to ourselves, each other, and our community.

This week’s fundamental is…

#3: Celebrate and Cherish Our Latino Culture

We must invest our time and assets to advance our unique heritage with pride and gratitude and build our community, by setting an example for others and honoring those before us.

Student Spotlights

Gabriel Estrada

Congratulations to Gabriel Estrada from San Juan Diego Catholic Highschool! Gabriel joined NHI to become a great leader and to be able to create connections with others. Gabriel has won many awards by doing barbecue competitions and playing different instruments, back home in Kyle, TX!
