Our Year 8 learners are currently learning about the experiences of refugees. We were fortunate to be able to have a talk by Abbas Nazari - an Afghan refugee. Abbas shared his experiences of fleeing Afghanistan in 2001 as a young boy and making the long and difficult journey to find safety. The learners heard how the boat he was on started to sink and how he was rescued by a Norwegian ship called the Tampa.
The Australian government at that time refused to accept the 400 refugees but he was fortunate enough to be given asylum in New Zealand. Abbas described the difficulties he faced on the journey and the challenges he faced transitioning to life in New Zealand. His powerful and insightful talk has helped our learners to complete their assessment task of producing a video diary of a refugee's story. Abbas was very impressed with the quality of questions our learners asked.
Abbas has just published a book about his experiences and we will be ordering copies for the library.
Following their talk with Abbas Nazari, our Y8 learners created documentaries depicting the experiences of refugees as they flee their home countries in search of asylum. Today, our learners screened their documentaries and received reviews from their classmates. The documentaries demonstrated that our learners had a good understanding of the experiences of refugees and were able to empathise with the challenges they face. Well done to the following who were nominated 'Best Directors' by their peers at our Individuals & Societies Oscar event!
The Oscar for Best Director go to ....................
Lucca Noel, Ela Cook, Marley Williams, Benjamin Sim-Peterson, Ellie Havercroft, Weilian Zhou, Sofia Sevenster, Shirish Pothi and Isa Syed.
The Year 10 Careers and University Programme began on 16 September with an assembly in the auditorium with Ms Aine, Careers and University Counsellor. This was a perfect time to start reflecting on favourite subjects, projects and learning styles as well as beginning to research possible future careers. The learners will join a platform called ‘Morrisby Careers’ where they can take psychometric assessments and learn about prerequisite subjects for certain university courses. Morrisby is trusted by over 1,500 schools worldwide and aims to promote self-discovery, action planning and career guidance to participants. Ms Aine will introduce the learners to the Year 10 Careers and University Programme and set a research project that they will complete over the weeks ahead in the tutor groups. Follow this link to learn more about ‘Morrisby Careers’.
The Year 11 Careers and University Programme will kick-start with an assembly in the auditorium on 30 September and will continue throughout the year when learners are working towards their IGCSE exams and are preparing to make decisions about their IB subjects. Y11 learners will be introduced to the ‘Cialfo’ university planning platform. They will also have access to ‘Morrisby Careers’ as they continue careers research and develop a greater overall understanding of university requirements. We encourage our learners to invite their parents or guardians to join the Cialfo platform to share the planning journey together. Sessions are led by Ms Aine, Careers and University Counsellor; Ms Melanie, IBDP Coordinator; Mr Sonny, Year 10/11 Phase Leader and the homeroom tutors.
Parents are also welcome to visit the ‘After Nexus’ website to start reading more about university applications and processes. We will post more updates here in the newsletter over the coming months to keep you informed about this important stage of your child’s educational journey.
