This week has been a true celebration of the Arts. All Year 7 to Year 9 learners have been involved in afternoon workshops throughout the week, exploring new skills and ideas in Music, Art, Dance and Drama. Learners have worked in mixed year groups illustrating poetry, creating with code, painting banners, constructing a cardboard mural, making candles, hip hopping and chinese drumming, and these are only a few of the workshops which were on offer! It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and energy each afternoon throughout the the school and then hearing the excited conversations between learners sharing their experiences with friends after. The celebration assembly on Friday was evidence of all the creativity which has gone on through the week. It’s always great to see some unexpected faces performing and sharing their newfound skills in the Arts.
During MADD week the music department has had the pleasure of inviting an Artist in Residence to work alongside our Music learners in the Secondary School. Roo is the Founder and Co-creator or Songwork International. Songwork International works with the world’s leading international schools and colleges offering a range of workshops, one-to-one sessions, and classroom based curriculum aligned teaching programs. Private client lists includes Internationally recognised artists and new breakthrough acts. Roo has worked with many young artists assisting them to work alongside world famous songwriters and producers around the world and guided them towards careers in music or even towards recording contracts in the UK and LA.
This week Roo has run two separate workshops at Nexus. Firstly he worked with our learners who prefer to work behind the scene in music. Our tech crew and budding sound producers. He took them through the steps of how to set up live performances and a stage set up, ensuring the microphone and mixing desks were all calibrated accordingly and how to strip the set back down again. He discussed real life issues such as; avoiding feedback, working with difficult musicians and how to gain the best sound quality. Roo’s second workshop was working alongside the learner that wish to gain some direction on songwriting. He began discussing how to gain inspiration and begin to plan accordingly a successful song. The techniques and ensembles which you can create music for and then the learners began working on their own pieces. Roo has worked with many young musicians within schools and those who have shown a greater interest he has introduced to world leading songwriters.
We were very pleased to have Roo work alongside our learners this week and will welcome him back in the future. In addition Roo works privately working with young musicians to assist them record and produce a single and launching the single via Spotify. Roo offers 4 hour sessions for individuals or bands, plus the additional mix down time and tweaking. If your child would be interested in a recording session with Roo please contact me at music@nexus.edu.sg for further details.
