Happy New Year! Nursery have welcomed two new adults and four new learners so far this term and we are looking forward to welcoming more learners soon. Ms Kimberly has joined us as the homeroom teacher for NG and Ms Clara will support as a classroom assistant. Our Nursery classes are working together as one Nursery community.
This week we walked into our classroom to find a very strange visitor. A tiger had made a huge mess of our home corner and was sitting having his tea! In circle time we discussed where he had come from, why he was here and what he was doing. One learner was very concerned that “he was messing up the whole kitchen area” another thought “maybe he was scared of the thunder”. This provocation is the beginning of our new Unit of Inquiry into How We Express Ourselves. Our central idea is, ‘through play we can express our feelings and ideas and develop new understandings’. We will use the story ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea, by Judith Kerr to give learners different opportunities to express themselves in a variety of ways. The learners were very excited to work creatively with playdough and shaving foam experiences to make their own tigers and tiger stripes.
We have also been inquiring into Chinese New Year celebrations and traditions. We wish those who are celebrating this weekend Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year. It has been a wonderful start to Term 3 where we have welcomed a number of new learners and families to our community. Welcome Lucas, Sigmund, Dia, Max and Barto. We have also had the pleasure of welcoming two new staff members to our Kindergarten team, Ms Ebony in KP and Ms Lucia in KB.
The learners were excited to return to school and share their stories about holidays both in Singapore and overseas. These stories and experiences will feed into our new Unit of Inquiry into Where we are in place and time, Journeys. We will be inquiring into the short journeys we make in our everyday lives and the journeys that take us further afield. We will be asking the learners about familiar places and countries they connect with. We look forward to talking about the reasons we make journeys and the tools we need to explore.

Happy New Year! The Year 1 learners have hit the ground running with a very exciting start to Semester 2. We were very happy to catch up with old friends and meet new ones as we extended a warm Nexus welcome to our new learners, Ayman, Pio, Alicia, Neena, Virat, Abyaz and Rayansh. We reestablished our Essential Agreement, taking inspiration from the story, “Have you filled a bucket today?” by Carol McCloud. The learners discussed how to make a Bucket Filling Classroom and thought of ways to be bucket fillers by being kind, helpful and caring. We are enjoying seeing the many small actions the learners take to contribute to their class community.
This week, the learners visited our ‘Year 1 Exploratorium’ as a provocation for our new Unit of Inquiry into ‘How the world works’. We were so impressed with the learners’ inquiry skills as they demonstrated independence exploring the equipment, showed curiosity as they experimented, and came up with thoughtful questions. We are very excited to inquire into all their interesting wonderings over the coming weeks as we learn about forces through the Central Idea ‘People can apply their understanding of forces to invent and create.’

Happy New Year, welcome back, and a warm welcome to the new families joining us. We hope you all had a restful break and those who have recently moved to Singapore we hope you are settling into this wonderful city. There has been a buzz to the new school term and the first week back was lovely to have the learners on campus, hearing about all their activities and adventures whether these were overseas or here in Singapore.
The start of semester has seen the Year 2 learners at full speed, with a field trip and the fantastic Lunar New Year celebrations that have taken place. It has been wonderful to see the excited faces of our learners finally being able to go on a school trip, immersing themselves in the Future World exhibition at the Art Science Museum. Their faces were lit up in more ways than one and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We really look forward to taking the learners on future trips to enhance their learning experiences over the coming semester.

I hope your Year 3 learner has had a great start to 2023 and has been excited to be back! Year 3 has been lucky to have new friends join us in our newly opened 3Y class. The homeroom teacher is Ms Kate — who is rushing to get to us from Canada, but was unfortunately held up unexpectedly. We will be seeing her in the coming days and are very excited to have a new member of the Year 3 team!
We kicked off the first week of school with a field trip to Gardens by the Bay! The link was climate change and sustainability. This made great connections to our UOI’s focus on UN Global Goals. These include ‘life above land’ and ‘life below water’ and climate action. To our surprise, there was an Avatar exhibition at the Cloud Forest. You can imagine how much the learners enjoyed that!
Our next unit begins after Chinese New Year with the central idea ‘Systems connect communities’. A brochure will be sent via Seesaw on Friday with more information and how you can help at home.

Happy New Year! It was a pleasure to welcome Year 4 back to school last week and wonderful to hear about the highlights of everyone's holiday. We have been very impressed with how quickly our learners have settled back into their routines and their learning. Well done Year 4! A few new learners have joined us this Semester, and to all new Year 4 families, we would like to send a warm 'Welcome to our community'.
This term, we have started our 'Where we are in place and time' Unit of Inquiry. This unit has the central idea of 'Migration of people changes places and communities over time'. This unit will give learners the opportunity to explore some of the reasons for voluntary and forced migration; the impact of migration, find out about some historical mass migrations as well as time to reflect on their family's migration stories. Within this Unit of Inquiry, we will also explore how the early migrants to Singapore have shaped the culture and success of Singapore today. The celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, is a great example of how past migrations have spread diversity around the world.
Gong Xi Fa Cai! We look forward to an exciting semester ahead!
Year 5 have seamlessly settled back into life and learning for 2023. It has been wonderful to hear about everyone's holiday breaks and be greeted with smiling learners, who are happy and excited to see their friends again.
Our unit of inquiry 'How the World Works' has continued to be a focus as we return to Term 3. On Thursday we held our Mini-Exhibition to share our learning with families. Over the last two weeks learners have chosen an investigation to inquire into 'how Scientific inquiry can lead to new understandings'. Learners have written a scientific question, selected a variable to change and collaboratively designed an investigation to test their variable. They have applied their research and communication skills as they have recorded their findings, inquired into questions that arose and prepared presentations to share with their families.
It was fantastic to hear our audience making hypotheses, participating in experiments and measuring variables. Our space was buzzing with scientific questions and explanations. Thank you so much to all of our families who were able to join us. Your children were so excited to share their learning. We hope you enjoy the photos below.
Year 5 would like to wish all of our community a very Happy New Year and to our families celebrating the Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai.
Another term has started with a bang with everyone coming into school eager to share their adventures and experiences from the holidays.
A new term brings us a new unit of inquiry where we will explore the central idea 'Energy can be transformed and used for human purposes'. We began our exploration by looking at how energy is transferred in liquids, solids and gases and started to explore what it means to think like a scientist. Over the coming weeks, we will be looking into the scientific process and developing our understanding of how energy is transferred and transformed.
We would also like to welcome our new 6W class. A small group but packing a lot of punch, Ms Jessica and her homeroom will be working with all of the current teachers and learners to explore what it means to be a collaborative inquiry learner at Nexus.
Be sure to keep your eye open for further information on our upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
