From the Head of Primary

The start of the 2018-2019 academic year at Nexus has been wonderful. It has been lovely to say hello to returning learners and to warmly welcome over 170 new learners and families. In just these first three weeks, we have hosted our Welcome Evening, observed Hari Raya Haji with our Muslim families and celebrated Teachers' Day.

During these weeks we know that you, as parents have worked hard to set your children up for success in a new academic year and, for some a new school and maybe a new country. Now it's time to set yourselves up for a successful year! There are some key communication tools we use in school to share what is happening in our Nexus community. Please make sure you've connected to these ...

Facebook Page (click here) - a space where we celebrate all that is happening in the Nexus community.

NPG Facebook Page (click here) - an opportunity for the Nexus Parent Group to share the events and activities they have running over the year.

Parent Zone (click here) - a one-stop place to find all the key information you need about life at Nexus. Whether it is viewing the school events calendar; finding out about our CCA, Music and Sport programmes; viewingdetails of our school residential trips and more ... this is the place to get all the practical information you will need about school life.

The Nexus Hub App - In Primary School, this is our 'window into the classroom'. Once you download the app to your device you will receive regular notifications from our teachers about the exciting learning engagements going on inside the classroom. This video gives you an overview of the download and login process. If you have any issues with using the App to access the Hub then please drop into the IT team in the C1 pod (near the main reception).

And of course, our fornightly Newsletters will also be full of exciting news. As well as this front page, that has our 'live' calendar displayed below, we have a range of other sections to look out for. These sections can be accessed from the menu across the top of the screen (on large screens such as laptops and i-pads) or the 'triple bar' icon in the top left (on small screens, eg: phones). Sections include:

    • Important Announcements (this week we have information on Bug Busting and our Mother Tongue Programmes)
    • Upcoming and Recent Events (today we celebrated Teachers' Day, last week we observed the Muslim festival of Hari Raya Haji and next week is our Years 3 to 6 Cross Country Event)
    • Arts and Sports and CCA News
    • NPG (with information on how to connect with your child's Class Representative and be part of the informal Whatsapp group for the class)

Another exciting way to find out more about our learning community at Nexus is to come along to our weekly Parent Workshops. These take place in the Mulitpurpose Room (on Level 2) every Tuesday at 8.30am. To find out which Parent Workshops are coming up and to register your interest click here.

This week's presentation was an introduction to The Nexus Way given by Judy Cooper, our Principal, myself and Peter Hart, Head of Secondary. The slides from the presentation can be viewed by clicking here or by choosing the Parent Workshops section of this Newsletter.

We are also pleased to publish our calendar for 2019-2020. Next academic year will be a very exciting one as we transition to our new school. This has meant slight adjustments to our teaching calendar to provide staff with time to prepare our new school to be ready to open its doors in January 2020 whilst ensuring that we provide a full academic year of study days. The calendar can be found on our website or by clicking here.

Please note due to our move, the start date of the 2019-2020 academic year will be starting slightly earlier than previously published. Our start date will be Monday, 5 August 2019. Please remember that there will be staggered start dates after Monday, 5 August for learners joining Nursery, Kindergarten and Year 1 .

As you can see from everything written above, all our teachers and classroom assistants work incredibly hard to create a wonderful learning community with many exciting learning opportunities and experiences. On this Teachers' Day, I would like thank all of the staff at Nexus for their hardwork and dedication in making the strong and vibrant learning community it is.

With warm regards,

Paul Beach
