All of these are strategies to encourage learners to recall from memory what they have previously learned or read.
These recall strategies can be used as a 'getting started' activity, a short challenge/extension activity or during a lesson at any time.
A - Z is a great activity to encourage the recall of keywords. It can be used as a starter for learners and returned to throughout a topic. The image in the centre represents the topic and the letters are there to act as cues. Learners can list as many keywords associated with that topic as possible. This can be adapted by only allowing 3 letters, or extended by asking learners to choose 3 words to put into a paragraph and elaborate on.
The Retrieval Clock
A great activity to retrieve information from a few topics, a different topic in each segment. Learners are given a set time to write as much as they can about that topic in the first segment. They can then identify any gaps in their knowledge using their class notes and text book and in a different coloured pen they then add to their segment.
Retrieval Grids (as seen on twitter!)
A great activity that could be used in lesson, or as a homework task, to encourage learners to recall from memory learning and knowledge from previous lessons.
Different to the Brain Dump, it allows you to write specific, levelled questions for your pupils so that you can direct their recall. It also gives pupils choice and adds a bit of competition to the lesson!
