Classroom Behavioral Benchmarks

Jefferson Elementary's Classroom Behavioral Benchmarks are adapted from the Boys Town Educational Model for Effective Behavioral Management Implementation. Benchmarks are measured through observations conducted by Jefferson's Certified Boys Town Consultant. 

Preventative Strategies: Statements made prior to a behavior occurring with the intent of preventing behavior from occurring

Types of Strategies Measured: Preventative Prompting, Blended Teaching, and Planned Teaching

Bench Mark: 1 per 2.5 minutes

Praise Statements: Statements made acknowledging positive actions from students, can be behavioral or academic

Types of Statements Measured: General Praise, Specific Praise, and Effective Praise

Bench Mark: 1 per minute

Praise to Correction Ratio: Praise statement should occur four times for every one correction statement 

Bench Mark: 4:1

Behavior Compliance: When given a corrective prompt, students should correct their behavior 75% or more of the time

Bench Mark: 75% or higher

Off Task Behavior: When measuring off task behavior of individual students over a 10 minute observation, while accounting for the number of students in the classroom, off task behavior should be 9% or lower

Bench Mark: 9% or less

Relationship Building Components: Strategies utilized by teacher to foster positive learning environment

Types of Components Measured: Welcoming atmosphere, receptivity to students, positive/encouraging statements, and appropriate quality and relational components

Bench Mark: 3 out of 4 components

Physical Environment Indicators: Organizational strategies utilized by teacher to foster classroom structure and expectations

Types of Indicators Measured: Core Skill Visuals, Classroom Rules, School Wide Rules, Classroom Procedures, Five Point Scale Visuals, and Daily Agenda/Schedule

Bench Mark: 4 out of 6 indicators
