Through Indesign, I have built many creative designs, utilizing lessons from my freshman year journalism class, Medill Cherubs and trial and error over many attempts. These designs have been published in many print specials across my three years on the paper. Below are examples of my work. The first was for our First Day of School Special, which introduces freshmen to the school. This centerfold introduced important people around Newton North. The second was a timeline of the New
For each print special, The Newtonite uses a more creative and graphical approach in our centerfold. I have been the key designer in many of these. The first one below was made for our Graduation Special, with the goal of memorializing the fun events that occur at the end of senior year. The second was a timeline of the Newton Teachers strike. We wanted to showcase our teams photography work during this time and give a summary to our readers. The third was for our First Day of School Special, which introduces freshmen to the school. This centerfold introduced important people around Newton North. I was especially proud of the hand-crafted polaroid and sign graphics, as well as the background collages. Each of these designs took many hours and went through many drafts, teaching me new skills through trial and error.
Our school newspaper is student run, meaning that most of the skills we utilize are passed from generation to generation. I took the lead between the last several volumes to educate the younger members of the paper on the often confusing and complicated use of Indesign. Featured above are several centerfolds I worked on with a younger member of the paper.
For our Graduation Special, we include statements from various community members, administration, and seniors. Because these our guest statements, we cannot change the length of the stories. This means we face the challenge of fitting them all on a page, which has challenged my design skills and forced me to be creative with use of space.
We have used other creative page designs to make our paper more eye-catching and attractive. For example, I designed this unique text wrap.
We publish numerous advertisements in our print specials, especially during our Graduation Specials. I have designed hundreds of parent ads that help them celebrate their students. I attempt to balance my designs by making each ad unique while also keeping a uniform look for our paper.
