Constitution Day is September 17th.
In 5H, we celebrate by creating our own class constitution. Students discuss what will allow for a fantastic 5th grade year of learning. They agree on several important guidelines. Finally their signature shows their commitment to being a positive member of the classroom community.
Students learn about the different parts of the brain and their functions. With this information in mind, students consider their effort, attitude towards learning, and fifth grade goals. Students practice growth mindset by adopting responses that help them be more flexible and confident learners.
My plan didn't work -- I should try a new strategy.
I don't know how to solve this problem -- I can ask a friend.
This is really hard for me -- this assignment might take me a little longer.
I made a mistake -- mistakes help me learn.
It's done and it can't get any better -- What can I improve or add?
We use the Responsive Classroom approach at our school. This means we believe that our social and academic curriculum are both important for learning. Getting to know students and families helps us work together as a team. When this happens, we see that students are more invested, engaged, and likely to share their voice in the classroom.

The curriculum is comprised of five lessons designed to prevent bullying and promote responsible, respectful student behavior. Each lesson includes a read aloud, discussion, and activity.
Students will learn to:
*Define and identify bullying behaviors.
* Recognize, refuse, and report bullying when it happens to them or someone else.
* Determine ways to be an ally or supporter of the person being targeted.
* Keep themselves and classmates safe in the lunchroom, playground, and on the bus.
* Use Burr School's core values (teamwork, respect, compassion, and perseverance) as a guide for behavior.

The Chill Zone is an area of the classroom where students can go when they need a break or a space to work independently. There are mindfulness strategies and tools there to help students feel calm and do their best learning. Anyone can (and usually does) use this space during the course of the year!
Sounds of Silence is a time on Friday afternoons for students to unwind and reflect on the week. They can continue a project they are working on, or select another quiet activity we have practiced in class.
