Students learn about fifth grade homework expectations in early September. Homework is typically assigned Monday through Thursday and is due the next morning. Ms. Harris will explain assignments, show examples, and answer questions to set the students up for success. Your child will record homework in his/her assignment notebook. Some assignments are ongoing and require planning in order to be completed by the due date. Notices and homework sheets will be in his/her homework folder. A very important part of your child's homework routine should be at least 30 minutes of reading every night. This reading can be done independently, with a parent, or with a sibling.
Please see the “Homework Guidelines” in your Burr School Handbook for more information on the homework policy at our school.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITY:
Periodically check in with your fifth grader about the work they are doing at school. What are they studying? How is it going? What are they proud of? What questions do they have?
“I don't have any homework tonight.”
Your child has READING homework every single night to help them grow as a reader. The fifth graders are expected to read for at least 30 minutes every night. Your child may also have other assignments. Check the calendar page on our website for all assignments.
“I forgot it." “My mom must have thrown it out.” “I never got it.”
If your child does not turn in his/her homework on the day that it is due, he/she will fill out a homework excuse sheet. Your child will be expected to complete the missed assignment by the following day. If your child accumulates three homework excuses, you will be notified. If your child misses additional assignments, a conference may be necessary.
Time Limits on Homework
Your child should spend no more than 30 minutes a night on homework (in addition to reading). However, if there is a particular evening when your child has difficulty with an assignment, please stop and attach a note for your child to share with Ms. Harris the next morning. We will be able to make a plan or clear up any confusion together.
How Much to Help
Parents often wonder how much to assist their children with homework. Fifth grade is an important year for developing independence. Students should do their homework on their own. If your child is not completing his/her homework independently, it is very helpful for us to know this information. Write a short note or send an email. We have many ways in which we can help your fifth grader be successful this year.
You can support the homework process by helping your child find a consistent time and quiet space for completing assignments. Find what works best for your family.
