6th Grade

Minute Meetings

Throughout the sixth grade year, the grade level counselor meets with each student individually and in groups to help get to know them and to help orient them to the middle school experience. The counselor is available for individual meetings to help students manage peer interactions, academic questions, and other issues that might arise.

6th Grade Social Events

Events are offered early in the school year in order to help sixth graders begin to build connections with each other. The 6th grade Ice Cream Social is held prior to the beginning of school and is a time for incoming sixth graders to meet each other in a fun (and delicious!) environment. In the fall of the sixth grade year there is a sixth grade social event which includes spaces to play games, dance and spend time with other sixth grade students.

Health and Wellness

All sixth grade students take Health and Wellness for the full year, meeting once a cycle (every six days). The class uses a skill-based curriculum based on the National Health Education Standards. The goal of the course is to offer students information about how to live healthy lives but primarily focuses on helping students to develop the skills needed to use this knowledge in their daily lives. Units covered include (but are not limited to), Analyzing Influences Skills: Healthy Influences, Goal Setting Skills: Nutrition, Self-Management Skills: Hygiene Habits, Accessing Information Skills: Substance Abuse Prevention, Interpersonal Communication Skills: Empathy and Assertiveness, and Growing and Changing. Our Health and Wellness teacher encourages parents to talk with their children about the topics covered in class and to infuse their own values as they relate to the curriculum.

Physical Education

As part of the Physical Education curriculum, all students participate in team building activities. These activities consist of group problem-solving activities that encourage students to take safe risks in a supportive environment. These activities are followed by teacher led debriefings that focus on interpersonal skills, leadership and group dynamics. Physical Education is a great setting for students to initiate teamwork, provide encouragement for their peers and to work though conflicts that can often arise in a fast paced, active environment.
