Membership

Membership in this chapter is an honor bestowed upon deserving students by the faculty, and shall be based on Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

Eligibility

  • Candidates eligible for election to this chapter must be members of the sophomore, junior, or senior class.

  • To be eligible for selection to membership in this chapter, the candidate must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at Newell-Fonda School.

  • Candidates eligible for election to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25. This scholastic level of achievement shall remain fixed, and shall be the required minimum scholastic level of achievement for admission to candidacy. All students who can rise in scholarship to or above such standard may be admitted to candidacy for selection to membership.

  • Upon meeting the grade level, attendance, and GPA standard requirements, candidates shall then be considered based on their service, leadership, and character.

Selection of Members

The selection of members to this chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal. The chapter adivsor(s) shall be the sixth, non-voting, ex-officio member of the Faculty Council.

Prior to selection, the following shall occur:

  1. Students' academic records shall be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility.

  2. Students who are eligible scholastically shall be notified and asked to complete and submit the Student Activity Information Form for further consideration for selection. To be eligible for consideration, students must be actively involved in at least two co-curricular activities a year.

  3. The faculty shall be requested to evaluate candidates determined to be scholastically eligible using the official evaluation form provided by the chapter advisor.

  4. The Faculty Council shall review the Student Activity Information Form and faculty evaluations using previously designed rubrics.

  5. Selected students will then be required to complete a service project prior to being inducted into membership. A project proposal will be presented to the Faculty Council prior to the project. The Faculty Council will meet to accept, modify, or reject. Once the project is successfully completed in a timely manner, the candidate will be inducted into the Newell-Fonda NHS.

Service Project

In order to be inducted into NHS, the candidates must complete 15-20 hours of service. They must plan, organize, and execute their service project in order to fulfill a need within the school or community. Once the project is complete, the students will give a formal presentation to Faculty Advisory Council to receive approval prior to induction. Once approved the students will present their projects during the induction ceremony.
