Hints & Tips for Remote Students

Webex, as is implied by its name, is web-based; so internet bandwidth is extremely important in steady connections. We have copied some suggestions below for students joining from home to help with their connections, and in doing so, making the overall connection a bit smoother.

1) Have their parents reboot the wi-fi router at a time convenient to everyone at home to make sure they have a solid connection.

2) If they can hard wire their computer/device to the internet, it’s even better.

3) Before joining the Webex session, any applications open or running in the background not needed for class should be exited, so the device’s resources and the internet bandwidth can be focused on the Webex session.

4) If they join and experience choppy audio, they can stop sharing their video with the Stop Video button at the bottom of their screen, so their device’s resources can focus on viewing content being shared and hearing audio and participate in the discussion.

5) If they join the Webex session, but cannot join the audio, they can use their microphone pop-up menu to choose Settings to get the dial-in information for the Webex session to connect audio via a cell phone or landline. You can also provide students with the dial-in information for the Webex session, in case they need this option. This way they can view content being shared on their device, but use a separate phone line for audio to hear everything being discussed.
