5/30/22- 6/3/22
More money exploration and review of previous math concepts. This week learners create a store and buy items off their peer's menus. We're also focusing on addition and subtraction with regrouping because learners need more practice.
5/23/22- 5/27/22
It's a 4-day week! We're continuing our menu project and exploration of decimals this week!
5/16/22- 5/20/22
We started our T3 project. We're creating menus from our country we're learning about in Humanities. The focus is on adding and subtracting decimals. We'll also continue reviewing concepts from the beginning of the year AND learning more about Measurement and Geometry.
5/9/22- 5/13/22
More review on time this week. Specifically about elapsed time. A school day schedule is a perfect example of elapsed time. How long is math class? How much time do you have for recess? How much more lunch recess do you get on Wednesday than other week days? ( Answer: 10 more min ). This week we're also learning about all things quadrilateral!
5/2/22- 5/6/22
We continue in our Geometry and Measurement Unit. We learn about perimeter & area. We measure the perimeter of polygon's and learn about shape attributes.
4/25/22- 4/29/22
The focus is on elapsed time this week! We are also completing our state testing, so lessons will be light.
4/18/22- 4/22/22
This week we're continuing our measurement unit. We are looking at graphing more in depth and practicing measuring with rulers. The learners are introduced to capacity and the differences and similarities between volume and capacity. Also, we will review time- an important measurement skill. Specifically we are working on honing our elapsed time skills.
4/4/22- 4/8/22
We will continue our measurement unit with a focus on all things measurement. For example, we will learn about measuring length, weight, time etc. We will learn how graphs help us organize information and are a tool for measuring. You can help at home by encouraging measurement. There are tons of measurement scavenger hunts on the internet. Do you chart your student's height as they grow at home? Do you have measurement records from the doctor. How do you weight fruit and vegetables at the grocery store and why? What time do you set your alarm to get them to school and appointments on time.
3/28/22- 4/1/22
Learners are introduced to equivalent fractions. We'll learn what "equivalent" means. Also, we will begin our Measurement Unit this week. We'll start off with a fun unit called "Metric Me" where learners will be introduced to the two measurement systems used in the world and use meter sticks to measure their body.
3/21/22- 3/25/22
We will practice stacking number line strategy to stack numbers, finish our animal sleep project, and take our end of unit assessment. We'll also review adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. For example 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5.
3/14/22- 3/18/22
This week we continue our T2 project about animal sleep patterns. For example, a giraffe sleeps 2/24 of a day. It's such an interesting project exploring how some animals sleep for long amounts of time and others for short amounts of time. Learners are also focusing on comparing these lengths of time to 1/2. For example, does a giraffe sleep less than half the day, about half the day, or more than half of the day. Also, they will be looking at their time management. What fraction of the day do they sleep? What fraction of the day do they go to school?
3/7/22- 3/11/22
Third grade learners began their Animal Sleep Project for T2. We are so excited to showcase all they've learned about fractions at expo night! We are working toward understanding fractions more in depth with a focus on real world application of fractions. Learners will also work on exploring fractional parts items, using models and sets. We'll continue learning about fractions on a number line.
2/14/22- 2/18/22
We continue learning about fractions. We'll draw picture models and sets. We'll make graphs that show fractional sets and read a lot of books about fractions this week. As a reminder, if you have Amazon Prime there are a lot of full episodes of Cyberchase the cartoon which includes a host math topics that are easy to consume for younger learners.
2/7/22- 2/11/22
This week we begin our Fractions Unit! Learners continue to explore division, completing assessments, exit tickets etc. We also explore the relationship between division and fractions (HINT: Fractions are division)! We'll take notes on our math language, and draw models and sets to represent fractions. Lastly, we're focusing on how we use fractions in the real world...besides baking!
1/31/22- 2/4/22
We are reviewing division vocabulary and continuing our practice of solving multi-step equations. The focus is on academic language. What words do you notice in a word problem that tell you how to solve the problem? What information can be eliminated (if any)? We also continue our focus on the relationship between multiplication and division.
1/24/22- 1/28/22
We are learning about unknown numbers and practicing problem solving when we see unconventional equations. For example 10 = 2 x n. Learners are focused on recognizing variables in any form such as just a blank space, or a letter. We'll also continue our CUBES problem-solving strategy and apply this to division equations. You can help at home by encouraging learners to practice their multiplication facts.
1/17/22- 1/21/22
Third grade continues our division unit. The focus is on using repeated subtraction as a strategy to divide. You can help at home by using academic language when talking about math. Give learners a small math manipulative (cereal works well!) and ask them to take a large portion. 1. Count the total 2. Break the material into EQUAL groups 3. See how many are leftover 4. Write an equation to match your findings. 🌵
1/10/22- 1/14/22
Learners begin their division unit with a focus on academic language: dividend, divisor, quotient. Learners are focusing on using multiplication to solve division equations as well as learning how to manipulate numbers. For example, taking a total number of objects and breaking it up into parts. Learners will also focus on what we do with "leftovers" when we're making equal groups. They are introduced to the word remainder this week with lots of hands on activities.
1/3/22- 1/7/22
Reviewing multiplication: How many ways can we show that we understand multiplication? For example, using arrays, equal groups, with a multiplication chart, on a number line etc. What are inverse relationships? How are multiplication and division related?
12/20/21- 1/3/22
Winter Break. Please use IXL and Reflex math over the break to build skills. Thank you!
12/13/21- 12/17/21
We're making "array city" this week. Array city is an art project that focuses on using arrays to model multiplication. We use the arrays as the city windows in our city. Please check dojo for pictures. Happy Holidays! 🎄 ❄️ ☃️
12/6/21- 12/10/21
This week we're continuing to focus on multiplication facts and fact families. We'll prepare to make "array city." for Ms. Cabello. We're also focusing on patterns in multiplication like the property of 0- which means that anything multiplied by zero = zero. We are also noticing skip counting patterns within multiplication and learning how to effectively use a multiplication chart as a tool.
11/29/21- 12/3/21
Learners are building on what they already understand about the commutative property. For example, both addition and multiplication use the commutative property. That means that you can switch the addends or the factors and you'll receive the same SUM or PRODUCT. For example, 2 + 3 = 5 and 3 + 2 = 5.
3 x 4 = 12 and 4 x 3 = 12
11/22/21- 11/26/21
Thanksgiving break. Learners should work on IXL and Reflex math to build skills.
11/15/21- 11/19/21
Learners at this age can understand multiplication with two digit numbers times one digit numbers if they understand that multiplication represents "groups of" and a fast way to add. For example, if learners can show multiplication as repeated addition then they can solve 26 x 3 by adding 26, 3 times.
11/8/21- 11/12/21
We begin by introducing visual tools to help us understand multiplication. Multiplication is just a fast way to add. Learners will begin by drawing models of multiplication: repeated addition, equal groups, arrays, and showing multiplication on the number line.
11/1/21- 11/5/21
Learners are almost ready to begin their multiplication unit! We'll start with a ton of videos and discussion around what multiplication is. We are focusing on representing multiplication with drawings AND memorizing our facts once that is solidified.
10/25/21- 10/29/21
The focus this week is on CUBES strategy. This is a multi-step strategy to help learners solve word problems. We'll learn songs and practice what we learned a couple weeks ago in relation to addition and subtraction.
10/18/21- 10/22/21
We need additional practice with regrouping and subtraction across zeros. Please continue to practice with your learner at home. We will be pulling small groups based on learner feedback.
9/20/21- 9/24/21
We finished our Shark Tank project and continued practicing addition and subtraction. Specifically we worked on our regrouping skills. Regrouping is the new term for "borrowing" or "trading." Please check your learner's Friday folder for information on the final piece of this project.
We are focused on learning to subtract across zeros. There is a great strategy we learned to avoid regrouping. Ask your learner about this strategy!
9/13/21- 9/17/21
Third grade began their Addition/Subtraction unit. We are practicing manipulating numbers. Talking about addition and subtraction strategies. For example, counting up and Guess and Check. We also learned about the CUBES strategy for solving multi-step word problems.
C- Circle the numbers
U- Underline the question
B- Box the key words
E- Evaluate and solve
S- Solve and check
9/7/21- 9/10/21
Third graders are practicing rounding more and more. They are connecting what they learn to the real world. For example, when estimating prices. They are learning the importance of both estimation and accuracy. Both of them have a place in mathematics. We completed our "Rounding Hills" to practice rounding on a numberline. We're gearing up to move into our next unit.
Learners can practice math skills at home by using Reflex math and IXL. Contact your homeroom facilitator if you'd like more information.
8/30/21- 9/3/21
We're beginning STAR assessments in class this week. Learners continue to build on what they have learned about expressing numbers in different ways. We will introduce rounding and the importance of estimation.
8/23/21- 8/27/21
Learners are growing so much! This week we took a verbal assessment, and continue to expand on our prior knowledge of digits and creating numbers. You can help at home by noticing numbers in everyday life, practicing reading numbers correctly, and with skip-counting (2s, 5s, 10s etc). Next week we'll dive into rounding.
8/16/21- 8/20/21
Essential Question: Why is understanding place value important?
This week we continue learning how to represent numbers in different ways. We focused on how to write numbers, how to use expanded form to show place value, and how to use base ten models to show place value. We also began our IXL Diagnostic Assessment in class. We will continue assessing learning in class in order to place them into small groups.
8/9/21- 8/13/21
We are building on our knowledge of place value from 2nd grade. Learners are working with numbers in the thousands. They are using academic language to describe what digits represent when they are in different places within a number. Learners are creating numbers- and using word form, base ten blocks, and expanded form to represent numbers.
