This project demonstrates my ability to utilize clinical judgement to research different practices that may work for my future patiences using evidence-based research in nursing. I chose to focus on the effects of hydrotherapy on pain and anxiety in laboring mothers. I found an abundance of research that focused on this concept and the benefits that surrounds hydrotherapy and the benefits to both the mother and the baby.
This assigment demonstrates a situation where nurses on the unit had a lapse in clinical decision making skills which led to an adverse patient outcome. Adverse outcomes are seen on a daily basis throughout the world, and as nurses, we need to recognize these errors and find ways to decrease the likelihood of these events occuring.
During the program, we have spent a lot of time focusing on developing a systems thinking viewpoint. By learning about the bigger picture, we can understand why things happen and what explore the reasoning behind each explenation. We can recognize trends and come up with solutiions to problems that may affect a variety of different patients. We also spent a lot of time learning about how to find research that is derived from evidence-based practice which resulted in us becoming better critical thinkers. I can confidently say I have the ability to look at information and find out if research findings fall within safe and effective nursing care standards.
