Overview -
Sometimes when you have a mentee, your own research and teaching assignments, on top of your own personal problems, it can get overwhelming. Everyone has different ways to organize their days and schedules but here are a few things that you can do to make it easier.
Schedule days dedicated to your research and days dedicated to your mentee (this would be more useful in the beginning, when your mentee is being trained).
Set clear expectations of what is required of your mentee for when they come into the lab, e.g. reading assignments, data analysis, literature search, etc.
Schedule meetings to discuss progress, for training, and to give your mentee feedback, etc.
Take the time to train your mentee properly, and encourage them to be independent, but be ready to answer their questions and provide them with support should they need it.
Triaging questions: do I really need to answer this question, or can my mentee figure it out on their own with just suggestions? If you start doing that, your mentee will start thinking about their questions before they come to you, which will help with independence too.
Set expectations for when things need to be done, both for your own research and for your mentee’s research.
