Service Learning Project

I planned to create an activity in which my students could see the fun ways in which percentages were used in real life. The goal of my Service Learning Project was to reinforce strategies to find percentages by working in groups to calculate the percentages of Skittles by color. At the end, we discussed as a class the many different ways used to find percentages, this way, students would be able to see other ways the same problem could be approached.

This project was a wonderful experience I will take with me into my future classroom. It taught me valuable skills such as time management, communication, how to effectively engage with the students, and lesson planning.

This project helped me develop problem solving and critical thinking skills because it pushed me to find different ways in which the lesson could be carried out. Even though the content was fairly simple, finding ways to teach it in ways that relate to the students posed a bit of a challenge at first.

This project also helped me discover my leadership skills. I discovered I like to take initiative, and I excel at delegating. However, I do take a lot of pride in my work and so, I also discovered that I will go great lengths to make sure the work gets done whether others contribute or not.
