Education Reading Response
In this article, John Holt makes the claim that the public education system today fails to teach students in a meaningful, effective fashion. Rather, it is suppressing the natural desire in a human to make sense of the world, and, though that, learn. A child, who does not yet even understand what everybody around him or her is saying, learns language by his or herself. As Holt explains,
"He has solved the mystery of language. He has discovered it – babies don’t even know that language exists – and he has found out how it works and learned to use it. He has done it by exploring, by experimenting, by developing his own model of the grammar of language, by trying it out and seeing whether it works, by gradually changing it and refining it until it does work. And while he has been doing this, he has been learning other things as well, including many of the "concepts" that the schools think only they can teach him, and many that are more complicated than the ones they do try to teach him" (Holt 1)
But when a student is in school, they are told that this is the only place they learn. Now, the student begins to accept that this is the source for everything they need to know, and stop being curious about everything else. If they were allowed to explore on their own, they would learn everything they want to know, and often, that is exactly what they need to know.
In Wake STEM, students are encouraged to find what they want to know though systems like PBL. This is a step in the right direction, as they are free to explore more in areas that they are interested in. After all, the best motivator to learn is oneself.I think this is my best response because it was the clearest, most structured analysis I made. I recognized the argument that would become one of my most important point in my Education essay. First, I made my objective summary, explaining clearly what the main point was (Say), then went more in depth in the next paragraph (Mean). Finally, I went beyond the text itself and pointed out applications that applied to me and my peers (Matter).
