I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the North Carolina State University and leads the iEXCEL (Innovation for EXperiential Complex, open-Ended Learning) Lab. The lab works at the intersection of computer science, human-computer interaction, learning sciences and complexity science.Β

Research Agenda
I spend most of my time researching how data and computation can revolutionize learning and teaching about open-ended problems in STEM domains. For example, how data modeled as interactive simulations in Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) or Mixed Reality (MR) can be used to teach about climate change, fast fashion, etc. Learners explore the data from real-world problems in these simulations and can strategize to address them in a safe setting. These problems are unique as they can have many "solutions," and not all of them are known. The learners explore the different "solutions" to learn skills to address these problems. Complementarily I investigate artificial Intelligence, machine learning and data mining methods that support learning about complex open-ended problems. Lately I have also been researching human-data networks to study social and interdisciplinary research communities using network science.Β

πΎ Oct 2025: Dr. Mallavarapu and the Futurescape team conducted 6 game sessions with ENV 101 classes.Β
π Oct 2025: PhD student Stephen Liu and undergraduate student Trisha Gite presented their work as a poster in the College of Engineering, Applied AI symposium.Β
π Oct 2025: Dr. Mallavarapu and Nikhil Vasudeva were co-authors with Dr. Uzzo, Dr. Dunn and Dr. Allf on a ecological network science paper that got accepted to the Complex systems and its application (2025). Dr. Uzzo will be presenting at the conference in Dec 2025.Β
π Oct 2025: Undergraduate student Sairaj Gunda and PhD student Ory Wickizer joined the lab and will be working on the AMR project.
ποΈOct 2025: Dr. Mallavarapu, Dr. Sanders, Dr. Jhala and Dr. Chi were awarded the seed grant to design an interactive game about Antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
ποΈOct 2025: Dr. Mallavarapu and Dr. Matsuda got awarded ETF fund as a support to teach the Human Computer Interaction class.

ποΈ Aug 2025: Trisha Gite awarded the PI-SEUS undergraduate research scholarship and will be working with Dr. Mallavarapu and the Head of University Libraries, Jason Ronallo to map the research at NC State in Fall 2025.

ποΈ July 2025: Paper "Tell Me Who Your Students Are: GPT Can Generate Valid Multiple-Choice Questions When Studentsβ (Mis)Understanding is Hinted," presented at AIED 2025, won the Best Late Breaking Work Paper award.Β
