The Non-Degree Studies (NDS) program at NC State allows students to enroll in courses without being enrolled in a degree-seeking program, or before formally applying to one. The program is managed by the Department of Registration and Records.
Prospective students applying for online and distance education undergraduate certificate or licensure programs must complete the NDS application. For graduate programs or certificates, students should apply through the Graduate School.
Once submitted, an NDS application undergoes a Department Review, where a recommendation for admission or denial is made. The application then moves to the ODE Review for final checks and processing.
The following issues may cause delays in the review process:
Missing documentation, if required by the program (e.g., transcripts, personal statements)
Low GPA restrictions (applicants with a GPA below 2.0 must complete a form within Slate)
Campus safety flags (which may require a background check and committee review, or proof of eligibility for applicants previously suspended from another institution)
After all checks are completed, the applicant will be admitted or denied. The process, from submission to admission in SIS, typically takes 3-5 business days. However, delays may occur if additional review is needed, extending the timeline by several weeks. Please note that the application fee is waived for online and distance education undergraduate certificate and licensure programs.
As the program director or coordinator of a DE undergraduate certificate or licensure program, you have the option to review non-degree studies (NDS) applications for your program. When a student submits an NDS application, the DELTA ODE Administrative team processes it within Slate.
As a department reviewer, your role is to review applications submitted to your program and make a recommendation for admission or denial.
Please note that Slate access is required to review applications for your program. To gain access to Slate, please visit the Slate access page and follow the instructions provided.
