Map of the Dominican Republic

We are located in the Caribbean. We share the Hispaniola Island with Haiti and the official language is Spanish. We gained independence from Haiti in 1844. Just as George Washington is a founding father of the U.S., Juan Pablo Duarte is the foremost founding father of Dominican Republic. Dominicans are a mix of different cultures, primarily from Spain, Africa and the native Tainos. The Dominica Republic is a traditionally catholic nation, and is a democracy with the three main branches of power, similar to the U.S., that allows the freedom to worship. Flag

We are the only National flag in the word that has the Bible on it. It is open to the verse in John 8:32: “Y conocerás la verdad y la verdad te hará libre.”

Baseball

Baseball is the number one sport we practice in the Dominican Republic. It thankfully came to us through sugar cane factories established in the DR during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first Dominican player who played for a Major League Team in the US was Osvaldo Virgil, and since then we have had 3 Hall of Famers:

Juan Marichal, Pedro Martinez and Vladimir Guerrero.
