Writing Sample Assessment

Print Friendly: Grades 3-5

We ask incoming students to complete a writing sample so that we might identify your writing skills and experience.  This is NOT a test but a source of information for us to determine your level of comfortable proficiency.  Please work to the best of your ability.  

During this exercise please DO:

1. Work independently

2. Do your best work

3. Use proper formatting, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling

4. Print or write in cursive

5. Write as much as possible within the time limit (15 minutes)

Do NOT:

1. Ask for help 

2. Type on a computer

3. Use a dictionary or any research or reference materials

Some ideas to help you get started (choose one):

1. Write a story about the picture you see - (choose 1 from the pictures below)

2. Tell me about your favorite holiday.  Include what makes it special, the types of things you do to celebrate, and why you enjoy it.

3. Tell me about a place you have visited or would like to visit.  Be sure to describe the people, place, and some of their traditions.

4. Tell me about an invention that has changed the world.  How did it make the world a better place?  What impact has it had on your own life?
