Lieutenant Commander Dempsey L. Barnes, native of East Orange, New Jersey, he enlisted in the United States Navy April 08, 1988. After completing recruit training at Orlando, FL, LCDR Barnes transferred to Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian, MS for Yeoman “A” School training. After Yeoman “A” School he transferred to the staff of Headquarters, Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic, (SACLANT) in Norfolk, VA.
While at SACLANT, LCDR Barnes advanced to the rank of Yeoman Third Class Petty Officer. In March 1991, he reported to Commander, Carrier AIRWING ONE SEVEN, aboard NAS Cecil Field, FL, deploying onboard the USS SARATOGA (CV 60)
In September 1994, LCDR Barnes reported to the staff of Commander, Naval Reserve Recruiting Command, in Jacksonville, FL, earning Eight Gold Recruiting Wreaths and advanced to First Class Petty Officer. After his tour in recruiting, in February 1997, LCDR Barnes then reported to the staff of the Naval Military Personnel Command in Washington, D.C. where he served as the Leading Petty Officer for Selection Board Support.
In June 1998, LCDR Barnes next served as the Flag Writer to Commander, Carrier Group FIVE, home ported in Yokosuka, Japan, until September 2000. LCDR Barnes was promoted to the rank of Yeoman Chief Petty Officer, while deploying to the Persian Gulf and Pacific Ocean onboard the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63). In September 2000, LCDR Barnes reported to the OPNAV staff in Washington, D.C. as the Flag Writer to DCNO for Plans, Policy & Operations (N3/N5). He is a 9/11 survivor of the PENTAGON attack.
In January 2002, he reported as the Flag Writer to the Commander U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and U.S. 5th Fleet. He was selected to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and selected for a Commission to Ensign under the Limited Duty Officer (LDO) program, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Excelsior University.
LCDR Barnes next reported to LDO School in June 2003. He then served onboard USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75), as the Educational Services Officer, Personnel Officer, and Ship Secretary.
In June 2005, LCDR Barnes was a By Name Request (BNR) from Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command, and United States Northern Command, to serve as his Flag Secretary. In June 2006, he next reported to the staff of Commander, Joint Transformation Command for Intelligence (JTC-I) in Norfolk, VA serving as Executive Assistant to the Commander, and as the Navy Element Executive Officer until he was once again a BNR from the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, HI, where he was asked to serve as the Flag Secretary.
In October 2009 he reported to Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Pearl Harbor Hawaii as the Executive Officer, until February 2012. In March 2012 he reported as the Administrative Officer, onboard USS PELELIU (LHA 5), home-ported in San Diego Ca. His final two duty stations were on the Staff of Commander U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center Atlantic, from 2014- 2018. In November of 2017 he reported to Port Charlotte High School as a Naval Science Instructor and in June 2019 until present he reported to North Port High School as the Senior Naval Science Instructor. Selected as the “TEACHER OF THE YEAR” FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2025-2026.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy, and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with six Gold Stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal with a bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Navy Achievement Medal with six Gold Stars and various unit and campaign awards.
