Description/Purpose:
The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921.
The National Honor Society chapter of North Arlington High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a 5-member Faculty Council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year.
Requirements for Participation: Students in the 11th and 12th grades are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better on a 4.0 scale (88.8 on a 100-point scale). Those students who meet this criterion are invited to submit an essay and complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service and lists his/her participation in school and community activities. Participation in at least two school-sponsored extra-curricular activities each year and at least 15 hours of documented community service per year are required to be considered for selection. At least half of the yearly documented community service hours should be from service activities outside of those provided by the school.
Major Activities: Induction Dinner Fundraisers (at least one a year), Tutoring, Food Drives, Partnered events with HANDS of North Arlington (activities for adults with developmental disabilities), possibly an end of the year trip, scholarship opportunities.
