Uniform Guidelines

2018-2019 Dress Code & Uniform Policy

All students must be in uniform everyday unless they have been given permission by the principal to dress otherwise. There will be out-of-uniform days, which will be announced during the course of the school year (a dress code for these days is included in this handbook). All students in Kindergarten through 8th grade must wear the gym uniform on gym days with proper gym shoes (black or white). Socks must be worn with all shoes, all of the time, even on dress down days. Approved uniform items are available through Dennis Uniform (dennisuniform.com - school code: GNOSH).

BOYS: Boys may wear navy blue dress shorts from May 1st - September 30th OR navy blue pants any day of the school year. Pants MUST be worn beginning October 1st through April 30th. No cargo shorts/pants will be accepted. Plain white polos OR light blue or red polos with the Nativity logo may be worn. Boys must tuck in their shirts beginning in second grade. They will wear black, brown or navy blue belts with both shorts and pants beginning in third grade. Socks MUST be worn and should be white, navy blue or black. Socks should be visible above the top of the shoes.

GIRLS: Girls may wear navy blue dress shorts, scooters or skorts with NO ADORNMENT from May 1st - September 30th. They may wear the navy blue pants or plaid jumper/skirt from Dennis Uniform any day of the school year. Pants, jumpers or skirts MUST be worn beginning October 1st through April 30th. Shorts, scooters, skorts, jumpers or skirts should not be higher than 2 inches above the knee. No cargo shorts/pants will be accepted. Plain white polos OR light blue or red polos with the Nativity logo may be worn. Girls must tuck in their shirts beginning in second grade. They will wear black, brown or navy blue belts with both shorts and pants beginning in third grade. Socks or tights MUST be worn and should be white, navy blue or black. Socks should be visible above the top of the shoes.

SHOES: Students may wear white or black gym shoes to school. The gym shoes must not have colored stripes, designs, etc. Students may also wear dark leather DRESS shoes with hard soles. Pictures of acceptable shoes will be posted on the school Facebook page and website for reference.

SHOES NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR SCHOOL: Combat boots/shoes, hiking boots, dress boots, construction boots, flip flops, open toes, high heels, backless shoes, crocs. No contrasting colors, striping, flashing lights, wheels or designs.

SWEATERS: Students may sweaters over their uniform shirts. Sweaters must be navy blue and either zippered, button up, crew, or V neck vest. Hoodies are not allowed and there should be no designs or embellishments on the sweater.

FOR ALL STUDENTS: No make-up, large jewelry, outrageous nail polish, outrageous hair accessories, body tattoos or body piercings are allowed. Girls may wear one pair of simple post earrings (not dangle or hoops). Only natural hair color is acceptable and should not cover the eyes. Boys’ hair should not touch the collar of their shirt.

Students who violate the uniform policy may be denied participation in the next out-of-uniform day, serve a detention or may be required to sit in the office until someone shows up with proper attire for the student. The student may be given a zero on missed work.

Out of Uniform / “Casual Wear” Days: Once again, all students must be in uniform everyday unless they have been given permission by the principal to dress otherwise. There will be out-of-uniform days, which will be announced during the course of the school year. These guidelines must be followed to be able to participate in out of uniform days.

Students MAY wear: jeans, enclosed shoes of any color, short socks, shorts or skirts that are no shorter than 2 inches above the knee (May 1-Oct 1 only), sweatshirts, leggings (with a tunic length top), jogging suits.

Student MAY NOT wear: flip flops, open back/open toe/high heel shoes, shoes with wheels, tank tops, spaghetti strap shirts, low cut tops, extremely tight clothing, ripped clothing, shirts with inappropriate writing, make-up.

If you have to ask if something is acceptable, do not wear it. The Principal reserves the right to determine modifications of the dress code, and the judgment of all hairstyles.
