Dual Credit Practicum in Health Science
Principles of Health Science provides an overview of career exploration through systems of the healthcare industry. This course focuses on ethics, leadership, cultural diversity, communication skills and an introduction to medical math and research, with an emphasis on past and current healthcare trends.
This course focuses on accurate spelling and pronunciation of terms and building knowledge of basic medical vocabulary with an emphasis on prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining vowels. Anatomical, physiological, and pathological terminology are covered. Terminology related to the body systems is also discussed.
Health Science Theory & Clinical provides in-depth knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of career opportunities, advanced medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology as related to the healthcare profession. Key components of this course are industry certifications, standard precautions, and ethics. The students will apply these concepts and practice entry-level occupational skills in both classroom and clinical settings such as hospitals or other medical-related agencies.
These assistants are there to take care of the needs of the patient and carry out any orders the doctor may have. Their duties include taking vital signs, drawing blood, and administering medication.
The practicum in health science course is designed to give students a practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience.
As a Phlebotomy Technician the laboratory relies on you to collect quality samples from the patient to produce quality laboratory results. To do this, a phlebotomy technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence with patients while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and reliable manner.
Students are trained to record and monitor the heart’s electrical activity. They receive hands-on instruction in preparing patients for various methods of EKG testing, Holter monitoring, and exercise stress testing. Following the lecture/student lab classes, students will be placed in clinical settings to further develop the skill of electrocardiography on actual patients. EKG Technician courses are designed to prepare students to take a national certification exam.
Students will provide basic care to residents in a long-term care facility, communicate and interact effectively with residents and their families based on sensitivity to the psychosocial needs, and assist residents in attaining and maintaining basic comfort and safety.
