Concert Dress

All students enrolled in Band, Orchestra or Chorus classes will be required to wear Concert Black for all concerts.

What is Concert Black Attire?

First and foremost, it is completely black. Dress blacks are formal, classy, and elegant.

Students are free to choose the components of their dress blacks within the following guidelines:

• black dress shirt (collar, buttons, and long sleeves), sweater, or blouse

• black socks or black opaque stockings

• black shoes

• black dress jackets, ties, or scarves to enhance are acceptable

What is NOT Concert Black Attire?

• jeans, sweats, warm-up pants, yoga pants, leggings, mini-skirts or shorts

• t-shirts, tank tops, spaghetti straps, halter tops, or crop tops

• flip-flops, sports shoes, sneakers, black shoes with colored stripes or logos

• white socks, colored socks, no-socks, bare legs, or bare feet

Appropriate Attire

Students at Madison are expected at all times to represent themselves as maturely-behaving, sharp-looking young men and women. This is especially true during public performances, including all concerts and any outings or field trips. When performing, part of good stage presence is remembering that every moment in front of an audience is part of that performance, including time sitting down and waiting.

At Madison, we believe Dressing for Success is the responsibility of every member of our community.

  • Per district dress code, we request that all skirts be long enough to cover undergarments, buttocks and gentitals when seated. Choral students will sit on risers during concerts; this presents unique problems regarding appropriate skirt length.

  • Parents, we urge you to be very frank with your musicians and insist that they model their attire before the night of a concert. Please have them sit in front of a mirror to check skirt-length when seated.

  • In an effort to ensure Madison’s classy image, the Music Department has purchased a number of skirts in varying sizes that will be loaned to any young musician who is not dressed appropriately for a public performance. In addition, we have six black lap robes that can be used for students who will not need to stand during their performance.

As members of the Madison family, we in the Music Department feel privileged to be allowed to help shape your young musicians into the successful adults they will one day become, and we are grateful for all you do to support that mission.
