As a part of the Teacher section of the Well Read Initiative, we wanted to show students that, yes teachers know their stuff because they read books about their subjects but also that teachers love to read other books that are not about their subjects. We had a week long competition where students had to guess the teacher belonging to each of the books shelf selections.
The students were definitely able to get a few dead give-aways from the one or two teachers (who eat, sleep and breathe their subjects) but for the most part the week caused a buzz as students were surprised that the teacher's read such a variety of books.
In addition to this, it caused a buzz in the staffroom too as teacher's also joined in the guessing game and many took this as an opportunity to get a few good read recommendations from fellow staff teachers.
This is another challenge that we hope to repeat yearly, as our teaching cohort grows. Promoting a good reads list for staff to peruse and a buzz for students to see that their teacher's love to read.
In addition to the Guess the Shelfie initiative, we also have boards in each classroom for teacher's to promote what they are reading at the moment or to promote a favourite or inspirational quote. Again, this shares with our students the love of reading that staff have and helps to promote an culture of reading in the school environment.
