Drop Everything and Read is an initiative undertaken by the school to promote reading for enjoyment. Each week for half an hour of one class students get to drop whatever they are doing and enjoy reading and all the positive benefits that reading brings with them.
After the first year of Drop Everything and Read, we reviewed the level of student engagement and how students felt about DEAR. Oftentimes students forgot their books or picked a book that was beneath their reading level causing them to stop enjoying the reading time.
This year, in order to adapt to the reactions of students to DEAR and to promote student engagement and enjoyment, we took a different approach. This year for a half hour of their class, the students engage in an article that is connected to their subject. This allows students to engage with a different form of reading and encourages them to seek reading that connects with their passions.
Below are articles we are reading with our students every month.
Please feel free to join in with our of community reading and read an article. You can have a chat then about what is going on in the world when your child comes home.
