Williamson County no longer ranks students numerically. For the purposes of honors recognition in WCS high schools, we will only use the following Latin System:
Summa Cum Laude 4.25 and above
Magna Cum Laude 4.00-4.24
Cum Laude 3.75-3.99
Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be chosen using the criteria below. Students considered for this honor must meet the first three criteria. In the event of a tie, the fourth criteria will narrow the list to those with the highest ACT. In some buildings this process could result in multiple valedictorians and salutatorians in the same year.
1. Student must qualify for the highest Latin System honor awarded in the respective school. For example, if a school does not have a student in the category of Summa Cum Laude, then students must qualify for the next highest Latin system to be eligible for this honor.
2. Student must sit for the AP exam for every course in which enrolled and must achieve a score of 3 or above on 75% of AP exams taken. There is not a minimum number of AP exams required as long as the criteria for this honor are met.
3. Student will participate in at least 20 hours of community service above and beyond any other community service required by other organizations. Students must provide documentation of the completed community service hours and documentation of the completed community service hours required by other organizations to their counselor.
The community service hours may be completed between fall of their freshman year and May 1st of their senior year. Each school should have a system for students to submit their service hours digitally with the expectation that these hours will not be submitted to any other service organization for community service credit. Documentation of where the hours were served, dates and times of service, and official confirmation of service by a representative of the organization should be submitted for all hours. Schools will verify the completion of service for this honor. Community service is defined as unpaid, volunteer work conducted outside of a school course and intended to serve the needs of the wider community.
4. In the event multiple students meet the aforementioned criteria, then the highest achieved ACT composite controls. The last ACT scores considered for this recognition will be those from the February assessment of a student’s senior year. Only the ACT composite score will be considered without a super score consideration. No writing scores will be considered in this review.
All students who meet criteria 1-3 and/or have an equally high ACT composite score shall be designated as "Valedictorian." Any student who meets criteria 1-3 and has the next highest ACT composite score shall be designated "Salutatorian."
Each school will determine how these honors are recognized at the high school graduation service.
