All non-DP courses at Upper School use the MYP Grading Practices.
Formative assessments are used in the instructional part of each unit to inform students and teachers about the students’ understanding. Formative assessments are considered practice and help us to understand how the student is progressing in each criterion. Teachers should use formative assessments to give timely, criterion based, and effective feedback.
Summative assessments are given at the end of a learning period as a tool to assess the student’s growth and to allow students to demonstrate what they know. Summative assessments are the primary measure used to determine the student’s overall criterion based level of achievement.
The MYP approach to assessment varies in that the students are assessed on a set of criteria. Each criteria in each of the MYP courses are weighted equally (0-8). Each criteria is assessed at least once per semester (Terms 1 and 2 or Terms 3 and 4) to determine the first and second semester grades for the course. The criteria below represent the holistic nature of the MYP.
The student’s overall achievement level in the course is determined by evaluating evidence from each of the subject area’s criteria at the end of the year. Parents and students will be updated quarterly on the student’s progress in the course. Reports are available on Infinite Campus approximately one week after each quarter ends. The official grade for the course is determined and reported at the end of each semester. IB uses rubrics to communicate student’s achievement of the criteria on assessments and rubrics for individual course assessments can be found on Infinite Campus. All rubrics are on a 0-8 international scale. These are converted quarterly to a (1-7) scale - see below. We use our online grade book, Infinite Campus, to report on the IB achievement levels and to report out progress grades and the final grade at the end of the school year.
